5 on Friday 12/04/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a Gnome team for Blood Bowl – Hello, friends! Can I interest you today in an Angry Goose Encounter?

No?

Let’s settle for an angry goose miniature as part of this latest Blood Bowl team from the fine folks at Games Workshop. Behold:

This was a surprise when it was announced. Gnomes haven’t been part of Warhammer for a long time, and it’s really cool to get these throwbacks. The team is cool with a lot of personality and a healthy smattering of critters. Excellent!

Candlenaut releases KUROI on DriveThruRPG –  A solo cyberpunk-themed RPG, KUROI is interesting to me. At 25 pages, it looks to be a neat, little game:

Looking through the previews and the comments on the DTRPG page, this seems cool. I’ve gone ahead and grabbed a copy whilst it’s on sale at a healthy discount.

Wyrd releases Ashes of Malifaux supplement for M3E – I am very much enjoying this edition of Malifaux. It’s fantastic, and I’ve now painted up two crews (Leveticus and Jack Daw) and a bunch of accessories (scheme markersother markers, and status tokens). Now, there’s a new supplement on the way:

In addition to advancing the story of Malifaux, there are a bunch of new models being introduced. I love the Fumigator and the Leech King, but the coolest thing in here is Ezekiel and his undead Gremlins. They’re awesome.

Free League releases bestiary standees for Dragonbane – As much as I like a good bestiary, you do need something to represent the various creatures on a map. Well, if you do map-based games and combat, which I generally don’t. Still, if you do, and you’re jumping into Dragonbane, then this set represents some pretty great value:

There’s just a whole bunch of card standees in here, but you will need to buy the plastic bits to stand them up. If you’ve been using standees already, you’ll probably have plenty kicking around. The art is rather pretty and the price is very fair.

Atomic Mass Games releases Moff Gideon’s Squad Pack for Shatterpoint – More Mando! Moff Gideon is a really interesting (and well-portrayed) villain, and it’s great to see him make his way into Shatterpoint:

I like how the new Star Wars stuff cherry-picks some of the cool stuff from the old Expanded Universe. In this case, it’s great to see Dark Troopers make their way into the game. I hope we see some Thrawn-themed Shatterpoint sets in the future, too!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Marvel Zombies: Doctor Doom @ Azazel’s Bitz Box – oh, these minis are really striking! It’s really cool to see both versions side by side. Both are gorgeously painted, but it does sound like the normal version was a pain to do thanks to the basing. Thanks for sharing!

Painted Lockjaw @ The Bovine Overlord What a fun mini! There’s so much personality in this little guy. And, of course, he’s very nicely painted, too!

Grant’s Top 10 Solitaire Wargames of 2023! @ The Players’ Aid Solitaire gaming isn’t really my thing, but perhaps I’ve just not found the right game, yet? Going through this list, a few appeal to me. I love the presentation of Stuka Leader and Halls of Hegra. Mr. President also continues to be a dangerous, dangerous temptation…

The first blog post of 2024! @ Home of the Grumpy Gnome Welcome to 2024! Come on in, the water’s (mostly) fine. Lots of cool stuff in here. I need to give Boss Level a watch. I’d never heard of Quar, but I’ll be keeping an eye.

Laser Bayonet @ A Loft Full of Lead Silver Bayonet is a ruleset I’ve almost bought several times, but it’s never quite the top of my list. You know how that goes, I’m sure. Seeing this wee sci-fi adaptation is cool! I love seeing this sort of creativity in the hobby.

*  *  *

There have been a lot of posts since my last 5 on Friday, largely because it’s been 2 weeks.

Hobbywise, those Chaos Dwarfs are still not done. Soon…

I did finish one, wee Chaos Dwarf dude, and the trio of Gargants that I need for this weekend’s tournament. That’s 4 models done this week. Respectable, with another few nearly done.

No new purchases were made, miniatures-wise, though I did print 10 miniatures, which I’ll talk about on Sunday.

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 29 minis
  • Printed: 77 minis
  • Painted: 156 minis
