5 on Friday 19/04/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a new Ork Combat Patrol – I don’t really play much 40K, and I have two unfinished armies, and a bunch more Necrons that I could (and should) finish. I tell you this to make the point that I really do not need another 40K army. With this release, Games Workshop makes this resolve more difficult to maintain:

If I were to do Orks, I’d be all over this. Give me 2… possibly more? I love the Beast Snagga stuff. It’s ace. It’s pretty. It’s got big squigs! Oh, and the boss from the second set with get converted into yet another Megaboss for the AoS Orruks!

Mek Borg and Steel Psalm up on Kickstarter –  Mork Borg is a post-apocalyptic fantasy game, and Forbidden Psalm is a miniature skirmish game based upon it. Now, you can play them both… with mechs:

The two games recontextualise the original titles, creating mech-based RPG and skirmishy goodness. I’m really tempted by these, as I want a mech game and I love the tone of Mork Borg and Mork Borg-adjacent games.

Titan Forge is running a MMF Frontiers campaign for a printable Dwarf army – We like Titan Forge on this blog. Heck, I’m building a pair of armies using their models! Now, they have some new Dwarfs on the go:

This is a MMF Frontiers campaign for a big pack of STLs to allow you to print off an entire army of grumpy, dumpy warriors. Brilliant! There’s a lot of value here, and from a creator with a proven history of delivering real quality.

Onyx Path releases They Came from the Cyclops’s Cave – I really enjoyed playing They Came From Beneath the Sea at Tabletop Scotland 2019. The game was a lot of fun, and playing it with Matthew Dawkins was a real treat. Since then, they’ve released a number of supplements and spinoffs, the latest of which features cool, mythological creatures:

I love the idea of some pulpy, fantasy action playing out with these cinematically-themed rules. The system is so cool and fun that it can be applied to all sorts of things, and it’s great to see it do well.

Atomic Mass Games releases Bad Batch Squad Pack for Shatterpoint – Bad Batch is a show that I didn’t expect to like, but which has pleasantly surprised me. It’s not as good as the Clone Wars series, but it’s a lot of fun. Here are some associated miniatures:

They look great. Of course they do. All of the Shatterpoint stuff looks great. That’s a given by now, innit? I like that the core of the models is, of course, the clone armour, but then with a lot more personality mixed in. Good stuff!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Ronin: Dragon Rampant Warband @ Wyrd Stones and Tackle Zones – Dragon Rampant is on my current rotation for bathroom reading. Don’t judge me, even if I do make it far too easy… These guys look great, and will be useful in a game that I am keen to play.

Marvel Crisis Protocol tournament report: Street Level Violence 14Apr2024 @ The Bovine Overlord I always like this blog’s event writeups. The games sound so fun, the writing contains a lot of detail, and there are great pictures. I do wish he’d stop encouraging me to pick up games that I am trying to resist…

Forbidden Psalm: Corpse Collector or Jailer @ Candore et Labore I’ve long liked this miniature from Bestarium and this seems to be a really good use for him. I think Bestarium is actually a great range for use with games like Forbidden Psalm, and possible Doomed, too. This one is also nicely painted!

Turnip28 – Napoleonic Zombie Army – part 5 @ Imperial Rebel Ork This blog continues to push me towards Turnip28. The creativity on display, and which has been fostered by that game, is really impressive. Go have a flip through the miniatures. I didn’t expect the use of the Nurgle Blightkings, but they work well here.

Trench Crusade kitbashing extravaganza @ Gung-Ho Geeks This is a gorgeous selection of lovely kitbashes. These heretical legion minis are fantastically twisty and gothic. Great work!

There have been a lot of posts since my last 5 on Friday, largely because it’s been 2 weeks.

It’s been a busy week with work and not a whole lot of painting was done. I did manage to do a pair of miniatures for my FEC, though. These were Nagash and my Charnal Throne. This also meant that I managed to finish my first Woehammer bingo card for the year:

No new purchases were made, miniatures-wise, and none were printed, either.

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 29 minis
  • Printed: 77 minis
  • Painted: 158 minis
