5 on Friday 07/10/22

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Amazon team for Blood Bowl – Blood Bowl! Woot! It’s always great to see new teams getting released. This is especially true lately, with more recent teams having a lot more personality to them than some of the earlier plastic teams that followed the release of the 2016 edition. The Amazon are a good example of this, with a really cool, unique look:

In-game, these are an agile human team. But the rules aren’t what I’m really here for. I’m here for the toys soldiers! On that front, these looks fantastic. As usual, the price is also pretty reasonable.

This beautiful 120-sided die is up on Kickstarter – Right, okay. I really like this Kickstarter campaign. I like unique, different, nerdy… things. This is a great example of that. Is it all that usable? Eh, not really. It’s cool, though!

I’ve got a more in-dept review of this campaign scheduled for next week, so I’ll share more of my thoughts then. Suffice it to say, this is a really cool campaign and I’m delighted that it seems to be meeting with success.

Fabula Ultima TTRPG released on DriveThruRPG – I grew up playing a lot of JRPGs. I’ve written about this before, and my favourite is probably the original Grandia, though the Final Fantasy series will always hold a special place in my heart… despite the best efforts of Square Enix. Fabula Ultima tries to capture the feeling of these games on the tabletop:

So the thing I was most excited for here, and which the preview shows to be fantastic, is the quality of the artwork in this book. It. Is. Gorgeous. I’d have liked the DTRPG page to be a bit more forthcoming with information on the content on the book and on the system it uses, It’s hard to make a purchasing decision when there’s so little information, though at least the cost seems low. I’ll be looking out for review for this one.

3D-Printable terrain bundle, Where Legends FIght 3, up on Kickstarter – This is a fun, wee campaign with lots of cool bits and bobs that incorporate a number of very different themes. Most of the parts seem to be relatively small and are often quite specific. That said, I could definitely find a use for these:

I don’t know that I’d use much of these parts as terrain pieces, as such. What I expect that I would do is instead to use them for basing. There are so many pieces that would make for some really fantastic basing. This is especially true for the larger bases. Y’all know I can have some fun with a large base!

Prothero’s Guide to Spellweavery released on DM’s Guild – Clearly, I’ve got magic on my mind at the moment. Last week, we tried to quantify magic via maths, but this week we’re back to the mystical:

This 130+ page tome promised new spells, magic items, potions, creatures, subclasses, and the like. The art previews look fantastic. There’s new lore and guides. Most interesting, there are spellcasting organisations that you can join and work with. This is just cool.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Two Thin Coats: the arrival @ Scent of a Gamer  I forgot these paints were coming out. I’m always wary of a new paint range, but I do hope that Duncan has recognised the fondness that a lot of hobbyists have for him and has been careful about what he’ll put his name to. I’m looking forward to seeing some reviews of this paint range!

Metawatch Analysis: In Defence of Arcane Tome @ Plastic Craic It’s the Arcane Tome discussion that I like best in this article. I agree with the points made in defence of the arcane tome and I’d be gutted to see it go anywhere. It’s such a simple item that opens up some interesting options. I also really appreicate the use of the word rhabdophobic. Bravo.

Golden Demon UK 2022 Review @ Sprues & Brews – I remember some of my favourite issues of White Dwarf being the ones that covered the Golden Daemon. it’s great to see the event being back and it’s great to see the coverage of it online. This is a solid and fair review with a ton of great pictures!

A Match Made In Hell: Tzeentch/Khorne Daemons @ Line of Sight Wargaming With my revitalised interest in 40K, and Daemons in particular, this article caught my attention. I could field most of this army, actually, though I am sorely tempted to pick up the new Combat Patrol as well… Thematically, it’s a cool mix of opposing philosophies that really appeals to me. The point about access to a wider range of Warp Storm abilities is a very good one, too!

Armour of Change: The Complete Guide to Mastering the Psychic Phase @ Warphammer This is a detailed, useful and interesting article. I don’t play Thousand Sons, but I made damn good use of the psychic phase with my Daemons in last night’s game of 40K. I definitely need to learn how to really maximise my power in that phase because I can totally see the potential.
