It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.
Releases & Previews
Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:
Games Workshop releases Cadia Stands a new army box for the Astra Militarum – The Imperial Guard, as they were previously called, are probably a little overdue for some love from Games Workshop. A refresh of their core range is definitely needed, and that does seem to be what they are getting. As with many such new or renewed ranges, they’re getting an army box to celebrate the release:

Although not really my thing, the new Cadians do look really good. The big heavy weapons have a satisfying chunkiness to them as well, and the refreshed Sentinel is a refinement of the classic walker. Yeah, this is a cool set! It also comes with a special edition codex and the cards for the army. I love the artwork on the codex and am actually looking forward to seeing the depicted miniature released as I’m considering using him for a kitbash. More on that later…

Hans Im Gluck releases Mists over Carcassonne – I like Carcassonne. I know there’s not much to it, but sometimes that’s what I want. It’s a great game to play over a couple of drinks and some nice conversation. It’s a gentle game. Now, there appears to be a collaborative version of the game, too:

In this edition of Carcassonne, you’re still placing map tiles, but it’s no longer a competitive experience. Instead, you are collaborating to build your map, contain ghosts, construct graveyards, and generally not be afraid of no ghosts. It sounds cool, but I’ve yet to find a Carcassonne expansion or spin-off that I’ve really enjoyed, so I’m not sure if I’m ultimately going to give this a go.

Delta Green: The Conspiracy released on DriveThruRPG – I really like the idea of Delta Green. It’s a modern take on the Cthulhu mythos that blends cosmic terror and modern conspiracy. The modern setting makes it more relatable to some people than Call of Cthulhu might be, and the military twist opens up some interesting avenues. Again, I really like the idea of Delta Green; but I find the idea of running Delta Green pretty intimidating.

This latest release for Delta Green is a 1990s-themed sourcebook. It’s based on the original sourcebook that kickstarted Delta Green as a franchise. It’s a little sad to me that the 1990s, the decade of my childhood, is now fodder for historical sourcebooks. Oh, dear.

Mongoose Publishing launches Kickstarter campaign for Paranoia: Perfect Edition – Excite! A new edition of Paranoia is a cool prospect, especially when it promises to combine elements from current and previous editions, instroduce some basic continuity, and be presented in a beautifully-produced book.

I game my extended thoughts on this project in this week’s Kickstarter-Watch post. This may be a spoiler, but I liked the look of the project. Go figure.
The Onyx Path releases a new Scion supplement, Masks of the Mythos – Scion has always been an underrated gem from the White Wolf collection. In it, the players take on the roles of demigods, scions of great and powerful deities who live among us regular folks. The second edition has been out for a couple of years now, and we’re seeing a fair few supplements arrive on the scene.

As someone who really loves the Cthulhu mythos of H. P. Lovecraft, and really loves Scion as a tabletop roleplaying game, this book ticks a lot of boxes for me. In hindsight, it actually makes a lot of sense. Why shouldn’t the godlike cosmic beings of Lovecraft’s oeuvre produce scions of their own? This could be really cool.

Blog Posts & Articles
The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:
New Ogor Mawtribes Battletome 2022 Review – Warhammer Age of Sigmar 3rd Edition @ Sprues & Brews – I continue to really enjoy the Battletome reviews put out by Sprues & Brews. They’re consistently really good. I like that they don’t insist on covering every little, individual detail or getting heavily into numbers, but actually curate their own content. There’s also some nice, subjective reflection throughout.
Aeldari WIP @ Holt Miniature Painting – Wraith units are my favourite part of the Eldar (sorry, Aeldari or something) army. The author of this post has produced some really nice wraiths. I love the white armour. I love the purple. I love the crystals on the bases. Yeah, gorgeous!
Exalted: Planning Your First Game @ Ekorren – I’ve owned editions of Exalted since it was first released in 2001. I picked it up because of my love of White Wolf and the gorgeous artwork I saw on my first cursory flip through the book. The thing is, despite having had Exalted in my life for over 2 decades now, I’ve still never actually played it. That’s probably why this article caught my attention. This is a new blog for me, and this post is full of really good advice on running your game. I’ll be checking this blog out again.
Project ideas @ Swords After Dark – I really like people just sharing their ideas for projects. This post is a collection of rough notes on a project that the author might pursue, with some ideas for specific conversions. I like making these types of posts, myself. Thanks for sharing!
Top Three AoS Lists For Ragnarok AoS GT @ Woehammer – I like the Top Three Lists posts from Woehammer, but it’s pretty rare that all three of the lists in the article are interesting to me. Scratch that; it’s actually all four when you factor in the wildcard list, too! I’m not sure what I’d pick out as my favourite list. I’d probably lean a wee bit toward the Trogg-based list. Y’all know that I really love m’Troggs!
* * *
It’s been a slightly less productive week painting-wise, but I have made some progress. Since my last 5 on Friday, I’ve published the following posts:
- I did a little update to some of the galleries.
- Some thoughts on that slight feeling of aimlessness after finishing a project.
- A review of a couple of Traveller-themed Bundles of Holding.
- A look at a Kickstarter campaign for a new edition of Paranoia.
- A Throwback Thursday about D&D settings.
- My completed Prince Vhordrai miniature.
I actually just finished off some more miniatures, so they’ll be featured in a post tomorrow. I’ve not really got any others that are near-complete, so I’m not sure if I’ll be posting any more miniatures in the coming week. I’d better get started on the top 50 posts for this year, actually. If I want to run one of the posts each Sunday up to Christmas, I need to have the first one done for next Sunday. I’m still moving some games around, but I’ll get there:

Catch ya’ll next week!
