Taking Troggs to Tournaments

Real men play Troggoths.

It comes down to that. I wanted to attend my first Age of Sigmar tournament this year. My initial plan was to take the Maggotkin, the Ironjawz (with Kragnos), or maybe even get going with some Legion of the First Prince. They all seemed fun, but is any army really as fun as the Gloomspite Gitz, and the Troggoths in particular?

The answer is no, by the way. It’s no. Trust me. I’m right on this one.

I’m also really happy with how my Troggoths look. I’ve done a pretty good job with them, and that’s satisfying. That said, what would be in the army?

Well, my standard list, without artifacts, battalions, and the like, consists of the following:

List 1

Dankhold Troggboss (240)
 General
Fungoid Cave-Shaman (95)
Breaka-Boss on Mirebrute Troggoth (180)
 Allies
9 x Rockgut Troggoths (435)
 Reinforced x 2
9 x Rockgut Troggoths (435)
 Reinforced x 2
3 x Fellwater Troggoths (155)
3 x Fellwater Troggoths (155)
3 x Fellwater Troggoths (155)
1 x Marshcrawla Sloggoth (150)
 Allies

Now, the tournament I intend to play in is set to use the new rules from the new General’s Handbook. That’s the one that was released on Saturday. Via stores a minimum of 100 miles away from me. With poor postal links.

Does it seem great that army lists are due in on Tuesday when many of us won’t have even gotten our new GHB by end of the day on Monday? No. It’s not great.

Does it give suitable time to actually digest the rules and consider what will work for our armies in this new paradigm before we have to submit finalised lists?

No. Of course not.

Well, it’s not like they’re going to specifically put in the most problematic of the new scenarios!

Wait, Mighty and Cunning will be the second scenario? Ah…

Now, using the list above, a lot of the units in this army will become Galletian Veterans. This is good in some ways, as it will open up some options in terms of Battle Tactics and Grand Strategies, but it will really suffer from having a half-decent enemy unit in a Bounty Hunters battalion. That extra pip of damage against the small units of Troggs will hurt.

So, what could we try instead? And let’s bear in mind that I’m trying to reason this out without actually having the new rules yet! What a wonderful idea!

Here’s a first attempt, bringing in some alternative battleline units:

List 2

Allegiance: Gloomspite Gitz
Leaders
Webspinner Shaman (85)
 General
Dankhold Troggboss (240)
Fungoid Cave-Shaman (95)
Breaka-Boss on Mirebrute Troggoth (180)
 Allies

Battleline
5 x Spider Riders (100)
5 x Spider Riders (100)
5 x Spider Riders (100)

Units
6 x Rockgut Troggoths (290)
 Reinforced x 1
6 x Rockgut Troggoths (290)
 Reinforced x 1
6 x Rockgut Troggoths (290)
 Reinforced x 1
1 x Marshcrawla Sloggoth (150)
 Allies

Endless Spells & Invocations
Purple Sun of Shyish (70)

Total: 1990 / 2000

I sat back quite happy with this list for a while. I mean, it seems likely to be far more effective than the original one, yeah?

Then that lack of actually having the rules when attempting to write a tournament list came back to bite me. There’s really not much that this list can do in terms of grand strategies. Yeah, that’s going to hurt.

Damn.

Okay, well, we know that there are people who are smarter than I am when it comes to this sort of thing. The list above isn’t a hundred miles from this one from Plastic Craic:

List 3

Allegiance: Gloomspite Gitz
Leaders
Dankhold Troggboss (240)
 General
Madcap Shaman (80)
Orruk Megaboss (140)
 Allies

Battleline
9 x Rockgut Troggoths (435)
 Reinforced x 2
9 x Rockgut Troggoths (435)
 Reinforced x 2
3 x Fellwater Troggoths (155)

Units
5 x Spider Riders (100)
5 x Spider Riders (100)
5 x Spider Riders (100)
1 x Marshcrawla Sloggoth (150)
 Allies

Endless Spells & Invocations
Ravenak’s Gnashing Jaws (60)

Total: 1995 / 2000

Not paying the Webspinner Shaman tax does open things up a little bit. For reasons of pure joy, I’d rather have kept the Breaka Boss than switch to the Megaboss, though I do love the Megaboss, and I do have one painted up and almost ready to go. It needs rebasing. That wouldn’t take too long.

The main thing holding me back on this one is that I don’t really have enough time to get through the required miniatures that I’d need to paint up.

So, in the interest of just getting to the table for this event, I’d more likely go with an army that isn’t significantly different from the standard list that I’ve been using on and off for a wee while now. This’d be:

List 4

Allegiance: Gloomspite Gitz

Leaders
Dankhold Troggboss (240)
 General
Madcap Shaman (80)
Fungoid Cave-Shaman (95)
Breaka-Boss on Mirebrute Troggoth (180)
 Allies

Battleline
9 x Rockgut Troggoths (435)
 Reinforced x 2
9 x Rockgut Troggoths (435)
 Reinforced x 2
3 x Fellwater Troggoths (155)
3 x Fellwater Troggoths (155)

Units
1 x Marshcrawla Sloggoth (150)
 Allies

Endless Spells & Invocations
Purple Sun of Shyish (70)

Total: 1995 / 2000

A bit more magic than I’m used to. An endless spell, which is something I’ve not used much before. Otherwise, it’s all very familiar.

Another option is to take that list and break it down a little further. Those big units of Rockguts could be turned into 3 units of 6 or, perhaps, 6 units of 3. This would let me spread out, have more options, maybe a bit more of a presence. I’d be fucked in the Mighty and Cunning round, but I’m not expecting to do particularly well anyway so could take that loss as a given.

There is one other option. One option that takes into account that right now, having played none of the scenarios or even read the rules first hand, I really feel like I’m going into this blind. That option is to simply say “Fuck it. Kragnos.”

I like to think of this list as my “third of the eggs in one basket” option…

List 5

Allegiance: Gloomspite Gitz

Leaders
Kragnos, The End of Empires (720)
Dankhold Troggboss (240)
 General
Madcap Shaman (80)

Battleline
3 x Fellwater Troggoths (155)
6 x Rockgut Troggoths (290)
 Reinforced x 1
6 x Rockgut Troggoths (290)
 Reinforced x 1

Units
1 x Marshcrawla Sloggoth (150)
 Allies

Endless Spells & Invocations
Purple Sun of Shyish (70)

Total: 1995 / 2000

I’ve not actually used Kragnos with my Troggs before. It could be fun. Big damage dealer. Long charges. Still a good number of Troggs. Yeah, this’d be doable. I don’t feel that Kragnos gives quite as much to the Troggs as he does to, say, the Squigs, but it’s still going to be something.

What I don’t like about this list is that it’s not quite set up for Batallions. It feels like I’d get some Bounty Hunters and that’s about it. If I split up the units of Rockguts a little there might be a bit more efficiency with a Battle Regiment in there. I’d love a Command Entourage or Warlord Batallion, but just don’t have the sub-commanders to make it work.

I’m really unsure what to take. I need to decide pretty quick though. Comments and advice would be appreciated, but I’d really need it in the next day or so.

I mean, there’s also always the option of just giving up and taking Gargants
