Well, we’re at that point in the year when we look back and see what we’ve accomplished. What went well? What could have gone better? I’ll start with the resolutions from last year, letting me see where we got to with them. We’ll start with the hobby goals, where I had some firm primary goals, as well as some softer secondary goals which, whilst not a priority, would have been nice to finish:
Hobby Goals
Primary Hobby Goals
- 2,000 points of additional Maggotkin of Nurgle: This was successful! I added about another 2,000 or so points to the army, including a Great Unclean one, some flies, Bloab, and more. I’m delighted with how this went. You can see the full army by clicking here!
- Complete my 2,000 points of Troggoths: This was another success. Not only did I finish the army, but I also managed to take it to my first Age of Sigmar tournament! Click here to visit the army.
- 2,000 points of Sons of Behemat: Again, this was a big success. I blasted though these chaps in January. I want to do some more with this army, but as it’s in a usable state, it’s not going to be a priority. Again, you can click here to see the army as it stands.
- 1,250 points of Genestealer Cults: Nope! Didn’t even start this one. Not likely to in the immediate future, either.

Secondary Hobby Goals
- A couple of forces for some Osprey wargames: This was not a success. I just didn’t get to it at all. This one will roll over into next year, though.
- Complete my 2,000 points of Squigs: Big success! I managed to finish the bulk of the army over three days when I was on holiday. Fantastic. I’ve managed to play a couple of smaller-points games with these guys, but I’m keen to get them properly to the table. You can click here to view the army.
- 2,000 points of Kruleboyz: I only got a couple of models done, totaling 330 points. These were not actually done for the Kruleboyz, though. Instead, they were intended as allies for my Troggoths. Fine, but it’s still progress! I’ll take it.
- 2,000 points of Slaves to Darkness: I’ve made some progress, but not much. This might be an early one for next year, or maybe not. I’m still pondering that. The new book certainly has me that wee bit more excited for this army than I previously was.

Gaming Goals
- Play a lot more Age of Sigmar: This was a biggie. I really like this game and I wanted to play more. I wanted to get more consistent and stop forgetting things. I wanted to have a healthy rotation of my various armies for the sake of variety. I really wanted to get back to playing bigger games, as most of the games at our club were, in 2021, around 1,000 to 1,250 points. This was a huge success. I got a lot of Age of Sigmar under my belt this year, played in my first tournament, got to run intro games for others, and just had an absolute blast with the game. Total success.
- Get my Necrons to the Table: In 2020, I painted up an army of Necrons for Warhammer 40,000. I’m actually really happy with how they turned out. I wanted to actually use them. The thing is, I don’t have enough of any one thing to really have a proper focus for my army. I can’t make a decent list. In the past 2 months, I’ve played a fair bit of 40K, but not with my crons. I therefore did not accomplish this goal, but I did at least get back into 40K!
- Play a wider variety of board games: I love board games. I don’t think the industry is in the best place right now, but I still love the games. I’m delighted that this year I got to try plenty of new games, and get some old favourites to the table. You can see how many new things I tried by the number of new and returning games in this year’s Top 50 list. A big success on this one.

Final Thoughts
It’s been a good year for me, hobbywise. As the year wore on and I added new projects to the list, I again bit off substantially more than I could chew, but I still managed a good amount this year. In 2020 I managed to paint 83 miniatures. In 2021 I finished 68. In 2022, my grand total was 204, assuming I don’t get anything else finished before the new year. I’m delighted with this.
In terms of gaming, it’s also been a good year. I’m properly back at the tabletop. Wargames, RPGs, and board games were all back on the menu. We had a few really nice club events, one of which I wrote about here. 2022 has been pretty great from a hobby standpoint and I’m hoping that 2023 builds on this success.
