5 on Friday 28/04/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases new Seraphon army set for Age of Sigmar – Seraphon, formerly the Lizardmen, are an interesting faction who have long been overdue for an update. Their models were never terrible, but they were showing their age. I’m delighted to see their new book and models released.

I didn’t think the Saurus were that much of an update until I saw some in person yesterday. They do have a more savage look, and a good deal more chonk. Definite upgrade. The Slann is fantastic. Love him.

EDGE Studio releases Embers of the Imperium, a Twilight Imperium RPG – I really like Twilight Imperium. I don’t get it to the table all that much, because of course not. When I do, it’s a real event. The thing is, I find that I play TI for the scope and spectacle of the whole thing; not for any deep or meaningful story or background. I’m therefore surprised to see this:

I can’t say that this particularly tempts me. I don’t see this being a game I really want to play, but I’m interested to see what they do, if anything, to really make this reflective of the TI board game. Certainly there must be some people invested in the TI setting if this is seen as a viable game. I’m curious.

Ahsoka Tano to be released for Star Wars Legion – Ahsoka! Like many Star Wars fans, I’ve enjoyed Ahsoka’s journey the The Clone Wars, Rebels, and the Mandalorian. I’m really looking forward to seeing her own Disney+ show starting soon, and I really like her Shatterpoint mini that’s been previewed. Now she’s making her way to Legion:

The model is pretty solid. It’s a good mini, that captures her likeness very well. Is it a wee bit less impressive now that we’ve seen her Shatterpoint mini? A bit. It’s way better than her Imperial Assault mini, though! Yeah, this seems a cool addition to the game.

Hollandspiele releases Nicaea on Wargame Vault – Nicaea has been out for a wee while now, but has just recently been added to Wargame Vault. I guess it’s a print-and-play version of Amabel Holland’s delightfully irreverent and deliciously blasphemous game about the Council of Nicaea.

This is a game that sees players engage with Council of Nicaea, arguing for the direction of church and Christian orthodoxy. The game looks bizarre and fun, and built around debate, represented by cards. Interesting, this.

Preorders open for Republic City, a setting toolkit for the Avatar RPG –  I recently played the Avatar RPG for the first time and I really enjoyed it. I can’t claim to know much at all about the setting, so it’s cool to see setting books like this upcoming title being added to the range:

Coming out in July, this is a great toolbox for folk who know the setting and hopefully a primer for folks like me. I really enjoyed my first game of Avatar, so I’m keen to see what’s done to expand the line.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Painted Neophyte Hybrids @ The Bovine Overlord  Love the yellow! Warhammer armies should be bright and colourful. You won’t change my mind on that, fam! It’s really motivating to see these when I’ve got a stack of GSC minis in front of me to paint, too.

Adventures in 10mm – Mordheim @ Woehammer I love when the Woehammer peeps break out of their usual (excellent!) pattern and do something a bit different. This would qualify as something different. It’s something I’d love to do as well, actually. A nice, compact, cool little miniatures game. Yeah, this is awesome!

Grant’s Top 10 Solitaire Wargames of 2022! @ The Players’ Aid I’ve said it before, but what I really like about these lists at The Players’ Aid is that they usually feature loads of games that I’ve never heard of. In this case, not only are they wargames, but solo games. We’re definitely not in my wheelhouse. Makes for an interesting read, though.

Warmaster: Ogre Kingdoms @ Wargaming Workshop – Gorgeous. Between this and the Woehammer post, I’m clearly looking at wee minis at the moment. This is a beautiful Warmaster army, painted up mostly in contrasts. Good stuff!

What I talk about when I talk about miniatures @ Scent of a Gamer This is a really good post that tells some hard truths. I strongly relate to the points made in this post. You should read it.

Since my last 5 on Friday, here’s what’s appeared on NoRerolls:

This weekend is pretty busy, with a club open day and a Warhammer tournament. My painting was a bit slower this month, but I’m happy with what I did manage to finish. Will be looking to step it up next month!

Catch y’all soon!
