5 on Friday 02/06/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Slann Starmaster for Age of Sigmar – Although it’s not an army I’d especially care to play, I do like the new models in the Seraphon range. My favourite of the new models, previously available in the limited army set, is the Slann Starmaster:

The core of this model maintains the same aesthetic. The actual Slann himself is just an improved version of what was already a great mini. The chair/throne is massively better than it was. Massively. It has a real heft to it now, which makes it feel more real and less of a flimsy toy. This is a great mini.

Kobold Press launches Kickstarter Campaign for Tales of the Valiant – Kobold Press is one of several companies working on a new game following the recent hullabaloo around 5E Dungeons & Dragons and Wizards of the Coast’s back and forth over licensing. The thing that makes this particular title appeal to me is the fact that it’s Kobold who is putting it out. We like Kobold Press on this blog. This is known.

I’m a wee bit less enthusiastic about this, having taken a look at it earlier this week

Free League releases Urban Operations supplement for Twilight 2000 – The revival of Twilight 2000 seems to have gone down pretty well, and the boxed set has been well received. Free League is expanding the line with supplements such as this offering; Urban Operations:

This is another boxed set, stuffed full of content, including:

  • A 96-page book stuffed with new rules and gaming material.
  • 16 new Encounter Cards, for use in any town or city.
  • 10 modular battle maps for urban environments.
  • 4 modular battle maps for close quarters combat.
  • 4 scenario site battle maps, two of which for close combat quarters.
  • 54 battle map tokens for debris, sandbags, floor level indicators, blocks and breaches.
  • A double-sided full-color city travel map for the example towns of Krakow and Karlsborg, format 558x432mm.
  • A double-sided full-color battle map for the Wawel castle in Krakow and Karlsborg Fortress, format 558x432mm.

Speaking to others who have enjoyed this new edition of Twilight 2000 and have seen the Kickstarter previews for this expansion, it sounds pretty promising!

Atomic Mass Games releases Count Dooku for Star Wars Shatterpoint – I took a wee look at the imminent release of Shatterpoint last week. This week, it’s my favourite of the initial expansions. Dooku!

These look great! The Magna Guard are gorgeous models. Dooku looks great. Jango Fett is… also there! Yeah, love these. Temptation rising!

Kobold Press releases a new edition of their Tome of Beasts –  Kobold Press makes some pretty fantastic books, and their bestiaries are the best of them. The Tome of Beasts was their big, original release and it seems that they are now revisiting and revising it:

This is a reprint of the original book with a few additions and enhancements:

  • Full errata and streamlined mechanics to make monsters even more playable
  • 11 all-new creatures like the ashwalker, planewatcher, and the ancient cave dragon
  • Expanded tables by creature type and terrain
  • New monster art—and much more!

It’s always interesting to see companies circling back to their classic releases and revising them, rather than just constantly churning through new content.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

May the Battleforce be with you – War Hydra @ Table Standard This looks great! I love the green, and the red crests pop well against it. Good work!

What’s next for Warcry? @ Spalanz  A good reflection on the recent history of Warcry releases. I really do agree with the author on the hope that the next phase of Warcry is built less on FOMO-based releases, though.

CraicGPT: Rise of the Machines @ Plastic Craic A fun post from the recently-reinvigorated Plastic Craic blog. I think the AI actually picked up the house style pretty well, truth be told…

World of Dorkness #12: The Players Guide (to Vampire 1st Edition) @ World of Dorkness A classic book review. This is a look at the 1st edition Players Guide for Vampire: The Masquerade. It’s really cool to see classic books like this revisited and reappraised. World of Darkness books are generally pretty good for this sort of revisit, largely due to the amount of cool background and story development that was spread over the range.

Painted Atalan Jackals @ The Bovine Overlord More GSC! This time it’s the bikers. These are some of the best minis in the GSC range. Don’t they look great in yellow?

Since my last 5 on Friday, here’s what’s appeared on NoRerolls:

Tomorrow sees the next part of the series on RPGs and mental health.

Catch y’all soon!

  1. Picked up the Shatterpoint core box today, and so far have built Ventress. I really like the models, though, and definitely share your enthusiasm for Dooku!!
