D&D has longevity on its side. It has cultural resonance. It had money. What it doesn’t have is a particularly fun set of rules. It’s just not great as a game and, rules as written, it’s really a board game when it comes to combat encounters.
It’s the game that people seem, inexplicably, to want to play the whole time, though. I’ll go along with this. I still like the game, even if there are so many better ones. RPG sessions and campaigns live or die by the group, GM, and the social dynamics to a far greater extend than the rules. So, fine. I’d rather play D&D than not get to play RPGs.
