5 on Friday 24/05/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a new Combat Patrol set for the Chaos Space Marines – For me, the mark of a good starter box for any army is that you can happily and productively purchase multiple copies and get good use out of them. This latest offering the Chaos Space Marines definitely fits this crucial criteria:

I like this generation of cultist models, and I like that the set includes these alongside some normal Chaos Space Marines and some Possessed. Yeah, this is a good one for multiples, especially if you’re looking for something like the Word Bearers.

Need Games releases a Techno Fantasy Atlas for Fabula Ultima –  Fabula Ultima is the Ennie-winning, JRPG-themed tabletop RPG. I’ve got the book sitting a few feet away from me, and I really like the feel and tone of the game. It’s great to see more content coming out, including this setting guide:

I love the aesthetic of Techno Fantasy. The Final Fantasy series has already done this really well, particularly in Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 14. Given that it’s games like these that actually have me wanting to play Fabula Ultima, I’m going to grab this book if I get the chance to run a game. The whole theme is just so central to what I want out of this game.

Mantic begins taking preorders for Recon edition of Halo: Flashpoint – Remember when Halo was one of the last straws that put Spartan Games out of business? It’s Mantic’s turn to trot out a game based on the tired shooter franchise!

The models actually look pretty good, to be fair. I don’t know much about the game itself, but this is a nice enough set. There’s some decent terrain, a mat, all the rules, cards, dice, and tokens you’ll need, plus those lovely minis. For fans of the franchise, this looks quite cool.

The Army Painter releases ‘Most Wanted’ set of their Fanatic paints – The Army Painter’s Fanatic line of paints has been well-received. It seems to have really good coverage and a great variety of colours.

This box has a nice selection of paints, complete with basic colours, shades, effects, and metallics. There’s also a miniature in here to practice on. I do need to grab some of these to try at some point; possibly the metallics.

Snarling Badger releases Deth Wizards – Ah, Snarling Badger… they make so many games that I love to buy and then never play. I just need to get some time to really focus on getting them to the table. Their latest offering is called Deth Wizards:

Alongside the game, Snarling Badger released a trailer that has some pretty cool Dungeon Keeper-like vibes:

I love the theme of players taking on the role of a Necromancer and their associated undead warband. There are so many excellent undead minis out there, so it’s great to have a flexible system in which to use them. I can’t wait for my print-on-demand copy to arrive!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Mordheim Bretonnian Knights @ Wargaming Workshop – I love Highland Miniatures. I’ve got a lot of their stuff on the backburner at the moment. These look like nice prints, and the models are nicely painted in a clean scheme. Always great to see more Mordheim, too!

Warhammer – Hey Buddy, Go Flagellate Yourself! @ Kuribo’s Painting I like this type of now vs. then post. The Flagellants are also a set of minis that I’ve always liked. I might end up doing some for my current EMpire army using prints form Titan Forge. Mine will not be painted this nicely, though!

AOS4 Battle Tactics: Leaks and Analysis @ Plastic Craic A nice overview of what’s been revealed so far for AOS4 from one of the best AOS blogs out there. As always, this is a great read .

Top Three AOS Lists for Mowan Spring Championship 2024 @ Woehammer There are some interesting lists in here. I like the the Sons of Behemat list isn’t the usual Brodd-based one that seems to be winning at the moment. I like the Flesh-Eater Courts list, which is a fun-looking Hollowmourn army.

Daily miniature: cyber gorilla @ Scent of a Gamer This is a fun mini. Nice pose and cool expression. Yeah, simple but cool. The red eyes pop nicely, too.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

It’s been a productive week in the hobby in some ways, even if I didn’t get much painting done. Cleaning up some prints highlighted some equipment maintenance I had to do. It also meant I basically had to do the cleanup twice. I’m sorted now, though!

No new minis this week.

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 35 minis
  • Printed: 97 minis
  • Painted: 178 minis
