5 on Friday 07/06/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Termination set for Kill Team – I’ve not played the current edition of Kill Team. I bought the first box they put out and read through the rulebooks and… it seemed a lot less fun than the previous edition. I may well be wrong about that, but it was my first impression and I’ve just never really looked back at it. Bit like 40K really; just a bit of a disappointment. What I have liked from these sets are the models. This box does not let us down on that front:

Okay, so the terrain feels cursory at best. Like, what’s even the point in putting that in, really? The minis are great, though! These are both armies that I like. I really like the big coats on the space dwarfs, and I love the Brood Brothers for the GSC. It’s a pity to see the same characters from the GSC that are in every second box, but the bulk of this set is really, really cool.

Modiphius begins taking preorders for the second edition of Star Trek Adventures –  There seems to have been a lot of affection for Star Trek Adventures, the Trek RPG from Modiphius. It’s certainly had a large, well-developed range. It is, it seems, time for a new edition:

Promising a revamped and more Trek-themed version of Modiphius’ 2D20 system, this new edition is due to start shipping in August, so it’s not going to be too long a wait. Star Trek Adventures is a game that I’ve swithered over a fair bit. Is it time to jump in?

Atomic Mass Games to release another Rebels-themed pack for Shatterpoint – I love Rebels! It was such a fun show. Last month, we looked at a set of Shatterpoint models that featured three of the main characters from Rebels. Now, here’s a second set with another three:

Now, I really like these minis. I really like these characters. I must admit to being just a little disappointed in this set, though. Whilst the models look great, they are so much less dynamic than those from the other Rebels set. Still, it’s great to complete the crew! Here are both sets put together:

What a wonderfully thematic Shatterpoint list that would be!

Arc Dream Publishing release Dead Letter, a scenario for Delta Green – We looked at a good deal on Delta Green earlier this week. What good timing to see this new scenario released:

I’m immediately interested in any scenario that features postal inspectors. It’s just such a different premise than the usual investigators we see in these games. The book is available as a PDF and print-on-demand.

Joseph A. McCullough releases Deathship One – Whilst Grant Howitt might be my favourite RPG designer at the moment, my favourite miniatures game designer is probably Joseph A. McCullough. I like Frostgrave, Stargrave, Oathmark, and I’m interested in others. Now, here’s a new game from McCullough:

Unlike his games for Osprey and Modiphius, this game is being self-published by McCullough. It’s quite a small book, weighing in at fewer than 60 pages with PDF and print-on-demand options. Although primarily a solo game, I think I’d approach this more as a cooperative one. I’d like to try some more cooperative miniature games, and I like the idea of a survival-based game.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Lord of Change @ Heretic Deb – I love the Lord of Change, and this one is beautifully painted. It’s very much the classic scheme, innit? The most reassuring thing in this post is that, like my Lord of Change, this one also sat half-painted for a while before being finished off. I wonder how long that while was? Mine was a couple of years, at least…

Mutant Year Zero – Zone Wars Unboxing and Review @ Sprues & Brews Oh, is this out? Nice! I remember looking at the Kickstarter campaign back in 2022. It doesn’t feel that long ago… Oh, well. This is a nice, positive review that describes a light, simple, accessible miniatures game.

Hobby update: May @ Litanies of the Faithful I’m mostly sharing this for the yellow squigs. They look great, and I love nice, colourful armies. Thanks for sharing!

May 2024 retrospective @ Spalanz Some interesting games here. Some good progress on Dooku and pals, who are looking really nice. Seeing Shatterpoint laid out on the board amid a game continues to make Shatterpoint painfully tempting. I also agree that Hive Secundus looks really, really good.

May 2024 Gaming @ Dude! Take Your Turn! More interesting games! I’m keen to try that new version of Terraforming Mars. And Scholars. And I’ve still not played Combat Commander.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

I managed to finish off the 10 Plague Censer Bearers that didn’t quite make it into May’s roundup. I’m currently working on my handgunners and blunderbusses for the slow grow, and I’m really happy with how they’re coming on.

No purchases, nor prints!

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 35 minis
  • Printed: 98 minis
  • Painted: 188 minis

  1. Thanks for the shoutout. And you should play Scholars! The other two as well, though I’m not as sold on the TM dice game. For us, I like it well enough and others really like it, so I’ll willingly play it.
