5 on Friday 15/08/25

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a new Codex for the Leagues of Votann – I like the aesthetic of the Leagues of Votann. Gotta love me some space dorfs. And, hey, look; a new book:

I’ve had a stack of Votann sitting since they were first released. I’ve now gotten around to building a chunk of them, so let’s see if I can paint some. Do I even really play 40K? Shut up!

Green Ronin releases a playtest edition of the upcoming 4th edition of Mutants & Masterminds – Mutants & Masterminds is one of the most prominant and successful superhero RPGs. It’s now getting a new edition!

This is not quite that edition. This is a discounted playtest edition. I’ve seen companies do this before. Fantasy Flight did it, as did the folks behind the Marvel RPG. It’s cool to involve players in the development of the game in this way, I suppose. Personally, I’d hold out for the final product, but if I were already a big Mutant & Masterminds fan, I’d be all over this.

Preorders are open for the starter set for the new edition of Dungeons & Dragons – The starter set for 5th edition (5E) Dungeons & Dragons was a really good set. It was quite minimalist, but that meant it was affordable and accessible. How does this new starter stack up against that?

Hm. Hmmmmmm. Hmm. There’s more in the box, that’s for sure. It’s also more than double the price of the old set. We looked at the new The One Ring starter from Free League last week and that LotR-themed set is half the price of this box, and looks a lot more fun. I think this starter will do well, but the price point and contents (plus D&D-related fatigue) mean that I’m not quite rooting for it.

Corvus Belli to release Protectors of the Forest for Warcrow – I’ve been watching Warcrow a bit more lately, and I’m really liking their new Elf faction. These latest dudes are sweet:

It’s great to see the game growing. I think I still prefer the other two factions, but that doesn’t diminish how cool these elves are. And if I am complimenting elves, you know they must be good!

Onyx Path releases an Abyssals supplement for Exalted – Exalted is such a cool setting and an interesting game. The abyssals bring a darkness to the setting, and it’s cool that they’re being revisited for third edition:

This supplement brings death and drama to Exalted 3e; it finally gives the deathknights their due. Packed with lore, Charms, and enough necromantic flair to make a ghost blush, it’s great for anyone looking to embrace the darker side of Creation. Gothic grandeur, yo!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

11 years of painting miniatures @ Spalanz 11 years? That’s probably around the same time that I started painting again. It’s nice to mark milestones, isn’t it? I’ve also got a bunch of GSC minis in the queue, as well… too many of them…

Ronin: Homebrewed Mythical Creatures @ Wyrd Stones and Tackle Zones I love how creative this blog is. They’ve always got such cool stuff on the go. From this post, I especially love those foo dogs!

Mythic Bastionland – First Read @ The Giant Brain A quick overview of a game in which I am very interested. I love the tone and aesthetic of this, and the previous Electric Bastinland.

Boardgame Briefs: Flamecraft @ The Kind GM I don’t know how I’ve not played Flamecraft yet. It’s reasonably popular locally, and one friend is a particularly zealous advocate for it. I’m sure it will get to my table at some point, and posts like this make me want to chase that up.

Star Trek: The FASA Frontier (and Philosophical Theories On Spiritual Successors) @ Refereeing and Reflection I was supposed to play a Star Trek campaign a few years ago, but it fell through. I’m keen to give it another go at some point if our prospective GM wants to revisit it. This blog post is a fantastic deep dive into a huge amount of FASA Star Trek material.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

We got 1 miniature finished this week. That brings our totals for the year so far to:

Purchased: 50

Catch you next week!
