5 on Friday 08/08/25

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a new Combat Patrol for the Black Templars – the Black Templar continue their crusade across the galaxy with their new Codex and accompanying combat patrol boxed set:

Whilst it’s not the most exciting box, it seems like the type you could grab a couple of copies of in order to fill out the core of an army. That’s always welcome. I love that GW are doing more chapter-specific stuff with the Primaris marines these days.

Stonemaier Games to release their new board game, Vantage – Stonemaier are consistently a good publisher. They put out well-produced, well thought-out games that always go down well with our local group. Vantage is their latest offering:

This is a cooperative game in which players work together to explore a new world. I’m not the biggest fan of cooperative games, as I think they often descend into quarterbacking. However, if there’s one publisher who has earned the benefit of the doubt, it’s Stonemaier.

Free League releases Over Hill and Under Hill, a starter set for The One Ring RPG – Free League is putting out consistently great material for The One Ring. Today, we’re looking at a new starter set:

I’m not a big Tolkien fan, nor am I likely to run a game of The One Ring in the near future, but I do like a good starter set. This is a lovely box with a beautiful map, some cool tokens, and the necessary rules booklets. As usual, Free League knock it out of the park!

Preorders available for MTG’s Spider-Man set – Oh, hey, more Magic. They’re releasing a lot, aren’t they? Honestly, I’m less enthused for the Spider-Man set than I have been for others, but there will no doubt be some cool, interesting cards. I’m just not a huge fan of the theme.

It looks to be a full set, and actually won’t come with Commander decks. We’re looking at the usual spread of Play and Collector’s Boosters, along with the pictured bundle set. There have been a few previews, and I’d expect to see a bit more as we hurtle towards the September release date.

Slightly Reckless Games releases their OSR RPG, Berserkr – This one grabbed my attention for the aesthetic, which seems to share a lot with Mork Borg and associated titles. That’s a big plus for me.

All the page previews of this book look awesome. It’s got the punky aesthetic of Mork Borg and similar games, with a real rock-inspired viking feel. Yeah, this looks absolutely fantastic!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Brambletrek – Character Creation @ Rysaer Inc. This is the start of series of one player exploring the solo RPG Brambletrek. The author is the same one who penned this week’s Magic Monday post. I’m looking forward to seeing how it pans out; the game does seem interesting.

Daily Commander: Aphelia, Viper Whisperer @ J.M. Casual Blog I saw this and immediately sent it to a friend who runs a snake deck. Wrong colours, alas! Still, it’s a good post, and I like all the little commanders that came out with the Foundations Jumpstart set.

Soul Blight 1 @ Heresy of Us These are gorgeous. I love the almost-monochrome look. They are so striking!

Embracing the Bird: A Case for Nadu @ Eternal Durdles I get why they banned Nadu, and it does seem like the card wasn’t particularly thought-through in terms of balance. That said, I also really enjoy people picking through issues like this and offering an alternate viewpoint. Good points are made in here.

DMs Guild Review – Kobold Capers: Journey to the Crimson Lair @ The Kind GM This sounds like a fun adventure! I do like Kobolds a lot. They’re such fun little beasties! Yeah, worth a look, definitely.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

We got 2 miniatures finished this week. I also picked up a 14-model starter set for Warmachine. This brings our totals for the year so far to:

Purchased: 50
Painted: 108

Catch you next week!
