5 on Friday 22/08/25

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a new Battletome for the Flesh-Eater Courts – The Flesh-Eater Courts are such a fun army, and putting my own force together has been an absolute joy. Now, they’re getting their 4th edition battletome:

I’m really looking forward to running my army again once the new book is out. That said, I’ll struggle to put down the Troggoths I’ve been enjoying for the past wee while! I’m sure the knights will ride again, very soon. #SummerKingSeptember anyone?

Parable Games releases Don’t Play This Game – Y’all know that solo games aren’t really my thing, but I’m increasingly of the opinion that I should actually try one. Just gotsta find the right one. This one’s a horror game:

I think Horror would be a good hook for me. I love Horror-themed RPGs. I just think the RPG as a format is really well-placed to carry those themes. I like the conceit of this one; that you are placed against an unknown entity that is toying with you.

CGE releases a new edition of Codenames – Codenames is such a nice game. You can play it with all sorts of groups and it just works. There have been a number of spinoffs and reskins, but CGE is now releasing an updated 2025 edition of the original game.

This new edition updates the word list, refreshes the art, and includes a box insert to keep everything neat and tidy. Seemingly, the rulebook is more streamlined, though I didn’t really have any problem with the old one. I don’t feel a burning need to replace my old set, but for those only now buying into it, you’re getting a smoother experience.

Wyrd to release a starter set for the fourth edition of Malifaux – I do love me some Malifaux! Fourth edition is rolling around, and with it is coming a starter set:

At the moment, it seems like I’m going to be splitting the set with someone else. Both crews look great, but I’ll be grabbing the Ampersand one. They’re cool, mechanical Outcasts. I like the Outcasts a lot, and these guys are delightfully ramshackle.

Son of Oak Game Studio releases their new RPG, Legend in the Mist – City of Mist has been hugely successful and it seems that Son of Oak is looking to start expanding the franchise into other genres, including fantasy:

This looks to be a lot of fun! The focus is on narrative, rather than crunchy rules and heavy combat, which is a big plus for me. It’s a weighty tome at nearly 500 pages, and I love the art style, too. I’m keen to give this one a read.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Brayherd Escape! – Warhammer : The Old World One-Shot @ Burn After Running Notes on a session of the new Old World RPG to go along with the author’s actual play video, which is linked in the post. I must admit that I don’t really understand why this RPG is a thing, but it looks fine, and folk are having fun with it, so why not?

Monsterpocalypse – General Hondo Done! @ Kuribo’s Painting Here comes the General! I like the various Kaiju of Monsterpocalypse, and this big boi has been given a pretty amazing paintjob. Behold!

Flesh-Eater Courts Battletome Review (2025) – Warhammer Age of Sigmar 4th Edition @ Sprues & Brews A good review of a battletome I’ve already preordered. The book sounds fun, and I’m looking forward to getting the army to the table in September.

Wargame Forge 3D Prints: Gothic Buildings – Test, G125, GR125, GD016 @ Azazel’s Bitz Box Having just ordered the starter set for Adeptus Titanicus, this is exactly the sort of terrain I’m eyeing up at the moment. I’m sure mine won’t be as well-painted, but I’ll be checking out the STLs.

Supplement Supplemental! (Lower Deck Larks and Paranoia Farces) @ Refereeing and Reflection It’s really disappointing how lacklustre the Paranoia missions sound. I love Paranoia, and it deserves quality supplements. I’m delighted at how fun the Lower Decks book sounds, though. I wanted that book to be fun, and it alone has me considering finally checking out Star Trek Adventures.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

We got 20 miniatures finished this week. I also ordered a starter set for Adeptus Titanicus, which includes 6 miniatures. That brings our totals for the year so far to:

Purchased: 56
Painted: 129

Catch you next week!
