5 on Friday 05/09/25

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Miao Ying for The Old World’s Grand Cathay army – I’ve been really impressed with the Grand Cathay range for The Old World. Now, Games Workshop is adding releasing some new kits, and others that were previously only available in the army box. This new character is fantastic:

The dragon looks great, but I’m actually a lot more impressed by the humanoid character sculpt. That’s a really beautiful mini! This army a a whole is just stunning.

Wizards of the Coast is taking preorders for new Forgotten Realms supplement for Dungeons & Dragons – With a new edition of Dungeons & Dragons, it was only a matter of time until Wizards of the Coast announced a new book for what has, in recent years, become the default setting (RIP, Greyhawk) for D&D, the Forgotten Realms:

This is the Dungeon Master-focused book. There’s a player book as well, which we’ll probably feature next week. This book is full of content, including a few different settings within the wider Forgotten Realms, a lot of little adventures to pick up and play, and a bunch of additional material such as magical items, monsters, and villains.

Preorders available for MTG’s Spider-Man set – Oh, hey, more Magic. They’re releasing a lot, aren’t they? Honestly, I’m less enthused for the Spider-Man set than I have been for others, but there will no doubt be some cool, interesting cards. I’m just not a huge fan of the theme.

It looks to be a full set, and actually won’t come with Commander decks. We’re looking at the usual spread of Play and Collector’s Boosters, along with the pictured bundle set. There have been a few previews, and I’d expect to see a bit more as we hurtle towards the September release date.

The Army Painter to release new Speed Palette – Okay, so this looked a bit crap when I first saw it. It really looked like the basic, little 10-hole palette that I use with kids. There’s a little more to this, though…

It’s a bit like one of those Fidget Pop toys. The wells can be popped. That’s quite smart. The Speedpaints dry in a good layer that can be peeled off of flat surfaces. By popping that surface, the dried Speedpaint will just fall off, naturally. That’s cool.

Wyrd to release a starter set for the fourth edition of Malifaux – I do love me some Malifaux! Fourth edition is rolling around, and with it is coming a starter set:

At the moment, it seems like I’m going to be splitting the set with someone else. Both crews look great, but I’ll be grabbing the Ampersand one. They’re cool, mechanical Outcasts. I like the Outcasts a lot, and these guys are delightfully ramshackle.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Dude, where’s my mana: Edge of Eternities Commander Decks @ The Kind GM A nice writeup of the decks. I really like both of them, and I do feel they’re strong. There are a lot of cool, fun cards in them, too.

Daily Commander: Ygra, Eater of All @ J.M. Casual Ygra was the first Commander I built a deck around, but since then, I’ve learned a lot, and the deck is very much sitting in disarray. I need to revisit it. Some good ideas here.

TOWing the Line – Filling in the Blanks pt 2 @ True Line of Sight I’m really enjoying these posts about the author’s Ogre army. It’s really starting to take shape. I’d definitely recommend some of the Avatars of War Ogres!

The Logic of Magic: Why Internal Consistency Matters @ C. Wesley Clough I agree that there are so many different approaches that one can take to incorporating magic into a setting or story, so long as you maintain internal consistency. Things don’t need to be realistic of make sense in a general way, but they do need to make sense in context. A good read, this.

A New Army – Flesh-Eater Courts @ A Tabletop Gamer’s Diary This guy is a machine. He gets through so much. It’s great to see him tackling one of the coolest armies in AoS. They look great, as always.

  1. Cathay has been incredibly cool to see developed, but I’m definitely interested in Malifaux once again with the new edition stuff…
