It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a new edition of Necromunda – A new edition of Necromunda? Nice! I’m keen to see what they end up doing with it.

The set looks fine, but I do think that a bit more terrain would have been helpful. The game itself promises to be a refinement of what’s come before, rather than some massively revolutionary changes. I know that Necromunda players were anxious that the game might have been oversimplified or dumbed-down, so it’s great that they don’t need to worry on that front.

The Army Painter to release a set of metallic Speed Paint Markers – I’ve still not tried any of these pens. I’m tempted to pick some up to try and perhaps record significant kills on the chassis of my Chaos Knights. That seems fun, and a good use for these pens.

The latest little set of pens is this metallic set. I like the metallics put out by The Army Painter. I’ve been using their metallic Speed Paints for ages, and I recently grabbed some of their Fanatic ones. I need to grab some pens to try out…

Modiphius releases the digital edition of their Discworld roleplaying Game – Following the success of the crowdfunding campaign, the Discworld roleplaying game from Modiphius is now in the hands of most backers. My own copy arrived last week. Now, they’ve also released the digital edition on DriveThruRPG:

I’ve not had a chance to read through the book yet, but I’m looking forward to it. I think the care the Modiphius intended to take with this release is evident in the fact that they created a bespoke system, rather than trotting out their usual 2D20 system. I’m really looking forward to diving in.

Archon Studio releases the Siege Engines set for the World of Tanks TCG – The third set for the World of Tanks TCG is about to hit the shelves:

Do people play this game? We’re quite remote, and it hasn’t really made any impression here, as opposed to the sort of uptake that the Gundam card game has had. Looking online, the player base seems small, but pretty dedicated to the game. There’s not much of a secondary market as yet, which makes finding individual cards difficult and makes desirable cards really expensive already.

Themeborne Ltd to release a second edition of Escape the Dark Castle – I didn’t play the first edition of Escape the Dark Castle, but I did play the sci-fi version, Escape the Dark Sector, so I do understand how this game works.

This second edition remains a roguelike while promising to cut down on some of the randomness. Not only is this a new edition, but it’s also a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the game. This is a lovely way to mark that milestone.

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Warhammer Necromunda Skirmish Core Set Review @ Sprues & Brews – I’m quite glad to read that the new edition of Necromunda seems to very much be a refinement of what was already there, rather than an oversimplification or a sweeping set of changes. The system seemed to work well as it was, and really just needed a little bit of tidying and some quality of life improvements.

An exercise in pointlessness, or the great purge of brushes @ Pancratist – This is a really good, concise post summarising the author’s experiences in trying out lots of different paintbrushes. The findings are interesting.

The EDH Deckbuilding Process – Commander Agnostic @ I Write About Stuff – I like a commander-agnostic deck. I like when a deck works without relying entirely on a single card, even if that card can be repeatedly brought back from the command zone. I feel that my rabbits work this way, with the commander acting as a value engine on top of the deck, rather than being needed for the deck to function at all. This is a good article about how to approach building such decks.

13th century Europeans @ Wargaming Workshop – This guy is productive! He gets so much done, and it always looks so good. As always, the work on the shields is particularly impressive. Just some fantastic minis, here.

House Makabius Armigers @ A Tabletop Gamer’s Diary – I like Armigers. I need to build some for my Chaos Knights soon. I think I’d feel more confident trying out the colour scheme on a smaller mini, y’know? These ones look great, and I’m always amazed by how many minis this chap gets through.
