Phase 2 of My Necron Army – In Progress

I recently shared the Necrons that I painted form the wonderful Indomitus boxed set. You can take a look at them by clicking here. Obviously an Indomitus set alone does not an army make. So, then, I have started on the next phase of the army.

To begin, let’s see what I’ve already painted:

  • Overlord (1 miniature)
  • Royal Warden (1 miniature)
  • Plasmancer (1 miniature)
  • Cryptothralls (2 miniatures)
  • Skorpekh Lord (1 miniature)
  • Skorpekh Destroyers (1 miniature)
  • Plasmacyte (1 miniature)
  • Canoptek Reanimator (1 miniature)
  • Canoptek Scarab Swarms (6 miniatures)
  • Necron Warriors (20 miniatures)

These 25 miniatures represent a lot of painting for me. It beats my record for last year by about 25! They were actually a lot of fun to paint, too. Of course, with Covid restriction being what they have been, this wee army hasn’t actually seen a battle yet. Tragic. Still, if I can’t play, I can at least immerse myself in another side of the hobby.

Phase 2 of the army was build in dribs and drabs over a few nights last week. On Saturday evening I got to do the first layer of spraypaint and on Sunday (today) I added texture paint to most of the models (with just 10 warriors to finish tomorrow evening).

So, then, with this work underway, what’s actually being painted in Phase 2? I am delighted you asked, because if you had not it would have undermined the premise of this post! This is a mix of the units from a second Indomitus box and a handful of other models:

  • Cryptothralls (2 miniatures)
  • Skorpekh Destroyers (1 miniature)
  • Plasmacyte (1 miniature)
  • Canoptek Reanimator (1 miniature)
  • Canoptek Scarab Swarms (6 miniatures)
  • Necron Warriors (20 miniatures)
  • Canoptek Wraiths (3 miniatures)
  • Illuminator Szeras (1 miniature)
  • Tomb Blades (3 miniatures)
  • Immortals (5 miniatures)
  • Catacomb Command Barge (1 miniature)

As mentioned, the bulk of this is from another Indomitus set, with a few more boxes thrown in. Altogether, there are 44 miniatures in this phase, bringing my total number of models in this army to 69. I didn’t see much point in revisiting the Indomitus characters, but I might get around to chopping them up at some point in the future and seeing what I can do with them.

So, hopefully in a week or so I will be able to share some pictures of some more completed Necrons.

The thing is… Games Workshop put up all those lovely new miniatures for preorder, didn’t they? Oh dear. And, you know, I am pretty weak…

Let’s look at the plans for Phase 3:

  • Necron Warriors (20 miniatures)
  • Szarekh, the Silent King (3 miniatures)
  • Ghost Arks (2 miniatures)
  • Cryptek (1 miniature)
  • Canoptek Doomstalkers (3 miniatures)
  • Canoptek Wraiths (3 miniatures)
  • Triarch Stalker (1 miniature)
  • Triarch Praetorians (10 miniatures)

As you can tell, this phase is pretty heavily focused on vehicles. The Necrons have lots of really nice vehicles, and the only one I’d picked up thus far was a Command Barge. The 43 miniatures in this phase would bring my total number of models for this army to a princely 112. This is the biggest army I’ve had since my old 3rd edition Chaos force – an army that I no longer possess.

I’m really enthused for this army and I’m looking forward to sharing more progress very soon!

I’ve also started pondering Phase 4, which will be C’Tan focused, but more on that soon!
