It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.
Releases & Previews
Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:
Games Workshop releases new Rough Riders for whatever they call the Imperial Guard these days – The old Rough Rider models were always (to me) a really cool part of the Imperial Guard army. They were always a wee bit out of place, but with the Imperium of Man drawing troops from many, many worlds and the Rough Riders being a specific, specialised, and respected group of warriors, I always thought of them as being a bit like the Gurkhas, with their special place in the British armies. The old Rought Rider models were looking pretty dated and it’s great to see them updated and revitalised:

I love these minis. First, I love that their design cues still have those same Mongolian influences as the old models, but with more standard Imperial Guard gear also visible to better tie them into the army of which they are meant to be part. Secondly, I love their spear and the champion[s swords, and the other equipment they carry. It’s all really cool, and I love the slightly ‘lived-on’ feel it gives the horses. Finally, and best of all, look at those horses. I could use them for loads of different conversions and kitbashes. Fantastic!

D&D 5E supplement, Beyond the Golden Vault, released on DMs Guild – I like the idea of this book. Whereas some books look at particular settings for your games or give particular stories to play out, this 121-page PDF instead tackles a specific genre; that of the heist.

There’s a ton of content here, including new backgrounds, magical items, spells, subclasses, traps, and monsters. There’s also some NPCs and locations to import into your games. A heist is a real staple of RPGs, but it’s not always done well. It’s great to see a book aimed at helping you with that.

Modiphius launches Homeworld: Fleet Command on Kickstarter – I found it an odd choice when Modiphius put out an RPG based on Homeworld. I don’t really think about the individual people in that game, given the focus is on the ships. It’s like wondering about catering staff in the barracks in Command & Conquer, y’know? A Fleet command game, like that currently being promoted on Kickstarter, seems a more obvious product.

The game seems very well-produced and very visually impressive. That’s hardly a surprise for Modihpius, though. I don’t see myself backing this one, but for fans of Homeworld, this could be really cool.
Cubicle 7 releases Threat Assessment: Xenos supplement for their Wrath & Glory RPG – I quite like the Wrath & Glory line. It seemed to get off the something of a bad start, but Cubicle 7 seems to have recovered and built it out into a good game with a good line of supplements. The latest of these supplements is Threat Assessment: Xenos:

Unsurprisingly, this focuses on bringing alien (Xenos) species into the game. It covers most of the alien factions, but the most interesting ones for me are the forces of the Genestealer Cults. I like the idea of an insidious force that is spreading corruption within the Imperium. It opens up some cool opportunities for good storytelling. The Eldar are also always welcome!

Fantasy Flight Games releases Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game – Star Wars? Deckbuilding? Oh, this is tempting…

This is a 2-player game, which makes a lot of sense, with Star Wars being a very binary conflict. One player takes on the role of the Empire, whilst the other plays as the Rebel Alliance. Given that FFG is now something of a soulless husk being puppeted by Asmodee, I went into this with pretty low expectations, then I watched this:
It actually looks pretty fun. There’s some crunch here that I really appreciate. This actually seems pretty cool.
Blog Posts & Articles
The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:
Hobby Goals January Update 2023 @ Sprues & Brews – I enjoyed these posts from Sprues & Brews last year, and I’m looking forward to doing my own this year. There are some cool minis in here, along with some reflection on how the first month of the year has gone. I’m not a big fan of Tolkien, but I hope the author of this post enjoys getting into The Hobbit. I did really enjoy this book as a kid.
My son… @ Journal Entries & Random Thoughts – What a sweet story of a supportive father sharing his son’s hobby achievements. Thanks for sharing!
MidJourney: can you illustrate it? @ Rider of Skaith – What’s really interesting about this example of working with Midjourney is the iterative process the author went through to get the result he wanted. Really interesting to see, and there were some really cool results along the way.
Speed Painting World Eaters @ A Tabletop Gamer’s Diary– I’m not going to sit here and pretend that World Eaters are an army that I’m particularly invested in. I don’t really pay them much mind. But this post appeals to me on two fronts. First, I like the speed painting aspect. Second, I love the style of the white armour covered in blood!
Combat Commander News from GMT Games @ Dude! Take Your Turn! – Following on from my own recent musings on GMT’s P500 games (see below!), I really like seeing other folk get excited for GMT’s offerings as well. Of course, the author of this post is a lot more experienced than I am when it comes to GMT games. Whilst I can’t necessarily relate to the author’s love of Combat Commander, I can certainly understand the excitement!
