Thinkin’ About 2024’s Armies, Part 1: Stock AoS Armies

With the new year approaching, and 12 fantastic months of hobbying to look forward to, I’ve turned my attention to having a think about what armies to work on in the coming year. I’ve split them up into three parts, focusing on “stock” or standard Age of Sigmar armies, converted Age of Sigmar armies, and Warhammer 40,000 armies.

The choices in these posts are based on projects that I have already, at some point over the years, already started. I’m keen for 2024 to be about finishing things I’ve already started, rather than focusing entirely on new things.

With that said, let’s jump into some of my options for armies in 2024!

Skaven: Clans Pestilens

I had originally planned for Clans Pestilens to be my new army for the year 2020. I didn’t get far with it. In the interests of painting up stuff that I already have, here’s a list I could do:

Plague Priest on Plague Furnace (270)
Plague Priest (100)
Thanquol on Boneripper (430)
 4 Warpfire Braziers
Grey Seer (120)
Verminlord Corruptor (330)
10 x Plague Censer Bearers (180)
 Reinforced x 1
20 x Plague Monks (180)
 Foetid Blades
 Reinforced x 1
20 x Plague Monks (180)
 Foetid Blades
 Reinforced x 1
20 x Plague Monks (180)
 Foetid Blades
 Reinforced x 1

Total: 1970 / 2000
Reinforced Units: 4 / 4
Allies: 0 / 400
Wounds: 130

As far as new purchases go, I’d only need to grab Thanquol and some Gnawholes. I would also likely grab the Endless Spells. In terms of other units though, I wouldn’t need to make any further purchases. I feel this is also an army where contrast paints would make quick work of it. That alone make it, perhaps, worth exploring!

Orruk Warclans: Bonesplitterz

Destruction! Orruks! Pigs!

The Bonesplitterz are such a cool force. I share the concerns of some others that they are quite neglected and might find themselves bumped right out of the game in the next edition… but they’re still tempting. I have three boxes each of Boarboys and Savage Orruks. With that and a little bit of 3D-printing for characters, I could quite happily put together something like this:

Maniak Weirdnob (100)
Savage Big Boss (80)
Wardokk (80)
Wurrgog Prophet (170)
5 x Savage Boarboys (140)
 Stikkas
5 x Savage Boarboys (140)
 Stikkas
5 x Savage Boarboys (140)
 Stikkas
20 x Savage Orruk Morboys (320)
 Reinforced x 1
20 x Savage Orruk Morboys (320)
 Reinforced x 1
10 x Savage Boarboy Maniaks (300)
 Reinforced x 1
2 x Savage Big Stabbas (100)
2 x Savage Big Stabbas (100)

Total: 1990 / 2000
Reinforced Units: 3 / 4
Allies: 0 / 400
Wounds: 195

It would be fun to put together. It doesn’t feel especially future-proofed, but it would still be cool. I also have a Rogue Idol that I could use. He’s not particularly good, but he looks great. No additional purchases would be necessary for this army, and I’ve already done the printing I’d need to do.

Orruk Warclans: Kruleboyz

I feel like I have accidentally painted a decent chunk of a Kruleboyz army, just in the course of putting other things together. Between a couple of Dominion sets and other bits and bobs, I could happily put together something like this:

Breaka-Boss on Mirebrute Troggoth (180)
Snatchaboss on Sludgeraker Beast (290)
Swampcalla Shaman with Pot-grot (100)
Swampcalla Shaman with Pot-grot (100)
Killaboss on Great Gnashtoof (120)
Killaboss with Stab-grot (90)
20 x Gutrippaz (300)
 Reinforced x 1
20 x Gutrippaz (300)
 Reinforced x 1
10 x Hobgrot Slittaz (80)
10 x Hobgrot Slittaz (80)
6 x Man-skewer Boltboyz (240)
 Reinforced x 1
3 x Man-skewer Boltboyz (120)

Total: 2000 / 2000
Reinforced Units: 3 / 4
Allies: 0 / 400
Wounds: 172

In addition to the above, I’ve got a Sloggoth done, a Killbow done, and I have a Gobsprakk to do, too. I think at the moment that he is more useful in Big Waaagh than in Kruleboyz, though. I like the idea of a kruleboyz army but, truth me told, they don’t really excite me.

Gloomspite Gitz: Grimscuttle

I’ve got like 8,000 points of painted Gloomspite Gitz at this point. They are my favourite army. I love the look, the tone, how they play, etc. I liked them back in the old book, too; before they were good. My first game of third edition AoS was played with an army of spiders. They weren’t painted. I’d like to remedy this at some point, as this is the last section of the Gloomspite book that I’ve not yet painted. Here’s what I could do:

Scuttleboss on Gigantic Spider (130)
Webspinner Shaman (65)
Webspinner Shaman on Arachnarok Spider (250)
10 x Spider Riders (180)
 Reinforced x 1
10 x Spider Riders (180)
 Reinforced x 1
10 x Spider Riders (180)
 Reinforced x 1
10 x Spider Riders (180)
 Reinforced x 1
Arachnarok Spider with Spiderfang Warparty (210)
Arachnarok Spider with Spiderfang Warparty (210)
Skitterstrand Arachnarok (180)
Skitterstrand Arachnarok (180)
Geminids of Uhl-Gysh (50)

Total: 1995 / 2000
Reinforced Units: 4 / 4
Allies: 0 / 400
Wounds: 168

The spiders are, not great, gameplay-wise; at least not on their own. They work okay when mixed in with other stuff. I might be wrong there; I’d love to be. I’d welcome it. Like the Kruleboyz, I really like the idea of having this army finished, but the prospect of painting them does not excite me.

Maggotkin of Nurgle: Blessed Sons

This would be an expansion to my existing Maggotkin, rather than a new army per se. What I lack in my current army is mortal infantry. That’s why I’m looking to put together a bunch of Rotmire Creed and some Blightkings. Nurgling have also been on the list for a while, and I’m keen to do the other two Maggoth Riders, having previously done Bloab!

Lord of Blights (140)
Orghotts Daemonspew (320)
Morbidex Twiceborn (290)
Lord of Plagues (140)
10 x Putrid Blightkings (460)
 Reinforced x 1
10 x Rotmire Creed (150)
10 x Rotmire Creed (150)
10 x Rotmire Creed (150)
6 x Nurglings (200)
 Reinforced x 1

Total: 2000 / 2000
Reinforced Units: 2 / 4
Allies: 0 / 400
Wounds: 134

The Maggotkin are fun. I really love their aesthetic and, although a bit simplistic, I do like my turquoise and pink colour scheme. Looking at the Blightking miniatures, I’m going to put a bit of orange in there to break up the turquoise on the more armoured minis. This one seems good possibility as the models do excite me. I love how this army looks, and it’s fun to paint and play. I’m really looking forward to the Rotmire Creed, though I imagine they’ll be a bit of a chore to build.

On Sunday, we’ll take a wee look at some more options for next year. I’ve got some converted AoS armies to think about, or maybe even some 40K!
