Thinkin’ About 2024’s Armies, Part 3: Converted Age of Sigmar Armies

With the new year approaching, and 12 fantastic months of hobbying to look forward to, I’ve turned my attention to having a think about what armies to work on in the coming year. I’ve split them up into three parts, focusing on “stock” or standard Age of Sigmar armies, converted Age of Sigmar armies, and Warhammer 40,000 armies.

The choices in these posts are based on projects that I have already, at some point over the years, already started. I’m keen for 2024 to be about finishing things I’ve already started, rather than focusing entirely on new things.

With that said, let’s jump into some of my options for armies in 2024. Today: Converted AoS armies!

Soulblight Gravelords

The Soulblight Gravelord are, for now, all built.  There are more models I’d like to add in the future; most notably some Dire Wolves and more characters.  For now, I have enough built for a 2,000-point army.  I might have made the mistake of doing the fun models first.  That leaves mostly the more monotonous models to do.

Here’s a list that, whilst not ideal, would be buildable with no additional purchases:

Neferata, Mortarch of Blood (410)
Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon (480)
 Deathlance
Wight King on Skeletal Steed (170)
 General
20 x Grave Guard (320)
 Great Wight Blades
 Reinforced x 1
10 x Grave Guard (160)
 Great Wight Blades
20 x Deathrattle Skeletons (220)
 Reinforced x 1
5 x Blood Knights (230)

Total: 1990 / 2000
Reinforced Units: 2 / 4
Allies: 0 / 400
Wounds: 102

This is quite an exciting army.  I love hiw the conversions came out.  Not all models were converted, of course.  The skeletons and zombies didn’t really need it, but everything else had a lot of work put in.  I’m keen to not waste that work and really see this project out to the end.

Flesh-Eater Courts

The Flesh-Eater Courts project has been an exciting one.  The initial goal was to use Games Workshop models as the basis, like I did with my Terrorgheist.  I then branched out though, using historical miniatures as the basis of my Ghouls, and then 3D Printing for much of the rest of the army.

I was in a position where no further purchases or prints were required, but this situation has changed.

Heres the list I had been working towards before the new releases were announced:

Abhorrant Archregent (240)
Abhorrant Archregent (240)
Abhorrant Ghoul King (170)
Abhorrant Ghoul King on Royal Terrorgheist (450)
Crypt Haunter Courtier (110)
10 x Crypt Ghouls (80)
9 x Crypt Horrors (330)
 Reinforced x 2
— WARNING: Unit may be invalid.
9 x Crypt Horrors (330)
 Reinforced x 2
— WARNING: Unit may be invalid.
Chalice of Ushoran (50)

Total: 2000 / 2000
Reinforced Units: 4 / 4
Allies: 0 / 400
Wounds: 122

Now, it’s all a bit up in the air.  I’d like to perhaps do some Crypt Guard, along with the new characters and Knights, and of course, Ushoran.  I could see myself having to print up another 30 or so miniatures to make this army work with the new book.  This is exciting, though.

Slaves to Darkness (Nurgle)

This was a project that I was excited about for a very brief period.  There were a lot of conversions, a few models painted, and then… not much.

Given my love of Nurgle, and how much I like the new (well, not so new now) Slaves to Darkness book, this is still a really solid prospect.

Here’s what we’ve got:

Chaos Sorcerer Lord on Manticore (240)
 Mark of Chaos: Nurgle
Chaos Lord on Karkadrak (180)
 Mark of Chaos: Nurgle
Slaves to Darkness Daemon Prince (150)
 Mark of Chaos: Nurgle
 Axe
Exalted Hero of Chaos (90)
 Mark of Chaos: Nurgle
Chaos Sorcerer Lord (120)
 Mark of Chaos: Nurgle
5 x Chaos Knights (220)
 Mark of Chaos: Nurgle
5 x Chaos Knights (220)
 Mark of Chaos: Nurgle
20 x Chaos Warriors (360)
 Hand Weapon & Shield
 Mark of Chaos: Nurgle
 Ensorcelled Banner: The Eroding Icon
 Reinforced x 1
Soul Grinder (230)
 Mark of Chaos: Nurgle
Chaos Warshrine (180)
 Mark of Chaos: Nurgle

Total: 1990 / 2000
Reinforced Units: 1 / 4
Allies: 0 / 400
Wounds: 142

No further purchases are needed to make this work.  The only model I am really anxious about is the Warshrine.  I feel like mine is looking… iffy.  I’m not delighted with the direction I’ve taken with it and I’m not sure how to save it.  I’ll work something out, but it’s a bit of a worry, truth be told.

Stormcast Eternals… Sort of?

I loved the idea of doing some sort of flying goblin army.  I made a good start on the conversions, too.  I swithered over what army to do here, going back and forth between Stormcast Dragons and Kharadron Overlords. Both would have worked well, but the new Skywing Army of Renown made the decision a lot easier.

We’re going with the Dragons!

Ionus Cryptborn, Warden of Lost Souls (400)
Krondys, Son of Dracothion (520)
2 x Stormdrake Guard (340)
2 x Stormdrake Guard (340)
1 x Stormdrake Guard – Single (170)
1 x Stormdrake Guard – Single (170)

Total: 1940 / 2000
Reinforced Units: 0 / 4
Allies: 0 / 400
Wounds: 90

This army is about half done, conversion-wise. There’s a lot of work still to do. No further purchases should be required. My Element Games affiliate money for November ended up covering the last couple of models I needed for this army, so I’ll be good to go on diving into the kitbashing in the new year. This is a really exciting army and it would be good to get it done before the edition change.

I’m confident that with some work I can make some pretty good conversions for this army. I’m just a bit nervous that my painting skills aren’t up to really making the most of this army.

I think, like last year, I’m going commit to a number of armies rather than to specific armies. I think the armies in this post are the ones I am most excited about, so I imagine that they will form a big part of what I try to do next year.

  1. Looking forward to your posts now that Ive finally found the notification button. Posts like these I like to save as it helps when I do readings and have no idea of what the minis look like. Merry Christmas and happy new year!

  2. This has been a great series of posts and I’m interested to see your progress next year. I’m trying to convince myself that 2024 is less about buying models and more about churning through my pile of potential. I’m also looking forward to painting some neglected minis from Blood Bowl, Necromunda, Kickstarter projects.
