5 on Friday 19/01/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Onyx Path releases Across the Eight Directions sourcebook for Exalted – Exalted! Such a cool system. This latest book is all about taking to the seas!

This gives players and GMs a whole bunch of new locations in which to set their stories. There are loads of details, including some prominent figures in each location. A review suggests that many of these places are ruled by scheming grannies. Whether that’s a selling point is up to you, friendo!

EDGE Studios reprinting Star Wars RPG Starter sets –  The Star Wars RPGs that were originally published by Fantasy Flight Games are being reprinted by EDGE studios.

On the one hand, it’s great to see these good games being reprinted. They’re fun. On the other hand, this seems to be Asmodee reheating a corpse. It’s also funny to look at EDGE’s website saying that they “create universes” whilst most of their games are scavenged from the bloated corpse of Fantasy Flight Games. Still, good games!

Free League releases Building Better Worlds supplement for the Alien RPG – I’ve not played Alien. It’s unlikely that I will. I do have faith in it though, thanks to my utter belief in Free League as publisher!

This book opens Alien up. When I think of this game, I think of cramped, claustrophobic conditions. I think of a ship with corridors and vents, with metallic banging and the running or dripping of liquid in the distance. This brings you out onto a new world, ripe for colonisation… and filled with danger.

Cubicle 7 releases Aeldari supplement for Wrath & Glory – I liked the older 40K RPGS, and I like Wrath & Glory. Honestly, both are good and I don’t really have particularly strong views on which is or was better. The biggest advantage the older games have is that the range is just more developed. It’s great to see Wrath and Glory’s development starting to get really interesting. Anyways, Aeldari:

I love the Eldar. They’re a fantastic faction, and were actually my first Warhammer 40,000 faction. It’s great to see more RPG content based around them, and it’s great that we have more alternatives for player characters so we can stop playing as those pesky Mon-keigh!

Black Library to release the final book in the Horus Heresy series – This is the 64th book in the Horus Heresy series, and it’s also the final one. Books 55 onwards have been the ‘endgame’ of sorts, dealing with the Siege of Terra and the closing moves of the grand civil war that so defined the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It’s so strange to think that this series which has been going since 2006 is finally coming to an end.

I really like that the final three books, the closing trilogy, are written by Dan Abnett. He wrote the first three books in the series and it seems right that he should end what he started. I have a lot of catching up to do before I get to this book, but I can’t wait until I do!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Court of the Blind King – David Guymer @ Wordaholic Anonymous – I wasn’t aware of this book. I can’t say that I’m really up to speed on the background behind the Idoneth Deepkin, so a novel like this would maybe be a cool place to start. Certainly, this is a solid review that really sells me on the book.

Daily miniature: dead trees @ Scent of a Gamer I totally agree that these trees are fantastic! I make use of them myself, in my Glottkin, Daemon Prince, and Terrorgheist minis. I’d love to find a few more at a cheap price. Thanks for sharing!

Happy New Year! @ Double Down Dice We’re well into January and I’m still enjoying these 2023 roundup posts. There are lots of gorgeous minis here, and some cool goals for next year. Stargrave is one I’m keen to get going on, too!

Ten Recommended Vampire Novels @ Before We Go Blog I’m pretty familiar with some of these books, namely the VtM ones (of course I’m familiar with VtM), Anno Dracula, and Interview with the Vampire. Reading this list, Necroscope really appeals to me. I’ll have to check that out.

A New Year and a New Start @ Sprues & Brews Another good post full of cool targets for 2024. Keen to see how the Middle Earth, Shatterpoints and Marvel goals go!

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

Some good progress this week, and I’ve managed to make a start on my Pestilens. I’ve actually finished 20 Plague Monks as well at the time of writing, which I’ll share with you tomorrow and add to next week’s total. I’m not really sure what else is coming up. I’ve got a few half-finished posts that I may or may not get to. I do need to get back to RPG content on Saturday, but I need to find a suitable series to get going on that.

Painting, purchasing and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 7 minis
  • Printed: 0 minis
  • Painted: 18 minis

Good progress!

  1. I loved collecting the FFG Star Wars RPG stuff back in the day, even though I had nobody to play with. While I eventually sold my collection off, it’s still nice to see they’re keeping this stuff alive over at Edge! (Though yeah, it’s hard to see how they’re the ones creating universes…)

Also, Wrath & Glory?! Might have to look into this…

  2. Thanks for the shoutout! Those Star Wars boxes are interesting, might have to pick one up! Is there everything you need to ply in the box itself or do you need a base game?

    1. They’re starter sets for the RPG, so standalone, but expandable. The three games are essentially the same system but with a different focus on each. Edge of the Empire is your ‘Han’ set, focused on outlaws in the outer rim. Age of Rebellion is your ‘Leia’ one, focusing on military actions. Force and Destiny is your ‘Luke’ set, focusing on force users.
