The Games I’m Fixin’ to Play, April 2024 Edition

At any time, many of us have a wee list of games that we are trying to get to the table.  Sometimes these lists are even realistic and achievable!  Mine have not always been.

Today, let’s nip through some games that I really want to play in the near future.  Unfortunately, due to work commitments and some recent illness, I’ve not been to the club as much of late, nor had much ability to engage in painting.  Hopefully, things will shift and give me a wee bit more time going forward.

When I do, here’s what I want to play…

Oath

I’m really keen to get Oath to the table on two fronts.  First, I just want to get it to the table on a personal level to learn how to play it.  Once that’s done, I then need to find a group to do more of a campaign.  I’m told that’s where Oath really shines.  I’m finding myself increasingly interested in Cole Wehrle’s games…

Frostgrave

Frostgrave is a game I’ve played a few times in the past few months, following the completion of my soldier and cultist gangs.  I’ve only actually used my soldier warband so far because my regular opponent fields a cultist crew.

I’m keen to get a bit of Frostgrave on the go at club, and it seems like a decent time, what with Age of Sigmar being in its lame duck period between editions.  the accessibility of the rules and miniature-agnostic approach makes it a good candidate for some small-scale campaign play.

Viscounts of the Western Kingdom

I picked this up following reading about it over at the Dude! Take Your Turn! blog.  Architects of West Kingdom went down very well with our group, and several of us are keen to explore more games from the same stable.  This was the one I picked up.

Gaslands

Gaslands is a miniatures game of post-apocalyptic racing.  Think Mad Max in terms of tone.  It has been mooted before at club, but nothing really came of it.  Now we’re looking at the possibility of running some intro games.  I wonder if I’ll be able to get some cars converted up for use in the game.  I can play without doing so, but I’d like to have some suitable models finished, y’know?

I’d previously picked up a bunch of old die-cast cars and North Star’s first set of conversion sprues.  I’m sure I can bodge something together with those!

Paranoia: Perfect Edition

Paranoia is a perennial favourite on this blog, and I am keen to experience the newest edition.  I’d love to break out my forms and cards and dive into a couple of one-shot adventures using the new rules.

I suppose I’ll need to read them first, eh?  I loved the second edition of Paranoia, and the more recent Mongoose edition.  I have confidence in Mongoose, so I’m optimistic about the new version.

1989: Dawn of Freedom

I like GMT’s card-driven games.  Twilight Struggle and 1960 are real favourites of mine, and I also enjoyed Washington’s War.  1989 promises more of the same, and I am totally on board for that.

I was given it last Christmas and I’ve yet to get it to the table.  It’s based on the fall of the Berlin Wall, a pivotal event within my lifetime, and one which had such a profound impact on the world.  I want to play this!
