5 on Friday 10/07/26

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a new Core Set for Warhammer: The Old World – Whilst I don’t see myself playing The Old World for a multitude of reasons, this is definitely a nice starter set:

Well, I say it’s nice, and, yeah, it’s cool and flavourful, and with nice minis… but there’s not actually all that much in it. 16 Warriors, 4 Knights and a couple of characters does not a convincing starter Chaos army make. Still, the value isn’t bad if you collect both factions or can split with a friend.

Themeborne Ltd to release Escape the Dark Forest – As I mentioned last week when we looked at the upcoming second edition of Escape the Dark Castle, I really like this system. I actually went and chucked in a late pledge for both Escape the Dark Castle and this new game, Escape the Dark Forest.

This game is based on the second edition of the underlying system, so it uses the newer rules that aim to minimise some of the randomness in favour of a more coherent, roguelike, narrative experience. I love the idea of this game being set in some gnarly, twisted woods with new rules for fear and darkness. I’m looking forward to my copy arriving!

Archon Studio is taking preorders for their new Starcraft miniatures game – The Founders Edition two player starter set drops you straight into the Terran-Zerg war with premium components, exclusive early extras, and everything you need to hit the table fast. It’s a sleek, limited‑run launch box that showcases Archon’s sculpting and gives players a head start in the fight for the Koprulu sector.

Built as the definitive on‑ramp for the new StarCraft minis game, this set pairs two fully playable forces with terrain, rules, and founder‑only bonuses; a collector‑grade starter that doubles as a competitive core for anyone ready to command, swarm, or bunker down from day one.

Two Little Mice releases the core rulebook for their RPG, Tilight Sword – Promising to helps you play in the vibe of worlds like The Legend of Zelda, Dragon Quest, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Final Fantasy, Ni No Kuni, and the animated movies of Studio Ghibli, Twilight Sword has definitely nailed the right artistic style:

The system is D12-based, and players take on the roles of champions, heroes exploring dungeons and bringing all the peace to all the lands! I’d be really keen to flip through this book, partly out of curiosity for the rules, and partly because the art is just absolutely gorgeous.

Renegade to release Core Rulebook for their Dungeon Crawler Carl Roleplaying Game – So it’s an RPG, based on the books, that are based on the tropes and trappings of RPGs? Sure, I’ll bite.

I need to give the book another go. I tried the first one, but it was in audiobook form on a car journey and I just wasn’t feeling it. The RPG follow on from the concept of the book, with players as crawlers, explorers of a sprawling dungeon whose misadventures are televised for the entertainment of others. I like that it’s flexible in whether you play as canonical characters or go down the route of creating your own crawlers. I think I’d prefer the latter, but I like that both are offered.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Change Marines @ bigbossredskullz Beautiful! These Tzeentchy-boys look fantastic. They’ve got such a cool, old-school vibe going on. I’m pretty tempted to grab some of these files and make a little warband.

Board Game Top 10 Sellers: First Half of 2026 @ Sentrybox’s Blog Some of these are surprising, and some are definitely not. Flip 7 is not a surprise, nor is Wyrmspan. I’m surprised to see expansion in the top 10, as they’re the sorts of things that are bought by a subset of a subset. I’m also surprised to see Catan still selling. I mean, it’s okay, but there are just such better games around these days.

Age of Sigmar appreciation post @ Spalanz Everyone should appreciate Age of Sigmar.

May 2026 Monthly Round-Up @ Azazel’s Bitz Box A slightly delayed summary of May’s painting, but no less impressive for that. There’s a fantastic mix of miniatures here, and they all look great. Lots of vibrancy as well, which I always love.

Singing in the Dead of Night @ The Giant Brain Lady Blackbird is a game that’s been on my radar for some time, but I’ve never taken it to the table. I love these little, one-page games. They perfectly embody my own play philosophy of low rules, high interaction. This post definitely sells me on it.
