5 on Friday: 26/07/19

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday.  We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases and Previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Doom Patrol miniatures to be released by Knight Models – I really got into the first season of Titans when it came onto Netflix.  One of my favourite episodes was the one that featured the Doom Patrol.  I’m therefore delighted to see them replicated in miniature form for the Batman Miniature Game:

The minis are rather nice, as is usually the case for anything from Knight Models.  It’s a nice, little stand-alone box with some unique heroes in it.  They should be out in the next few months.

Paizo releases Pathfinder, 2nd Edition – Pathfinder is a game I never really got into, but I can certainly appreciate both the popularity and success of the game.  There are so many products available for the first edition and there are a lot of great sales as retailers drop first edition product in advance of the release of the second edition.  That release is coming very soon.

There seems to have been refinements in the system and significant public playtesting in advance of release.  I imagine there will be some resistance to a new edition from people who were really invested in the old one, but I know that these editions are also often welcomed for the fixes and improvements they can make.  I’m curious to see how this one turns out.

Gridopolis 3D strategy game up on Kickstarter – See, visually, this one’s tricky.  I can’t decide whether it looks good, or more like a cheap, plastic toy.  The idea itself is interesting and reminds me of the 3D chess boards from Star Trek:

The campaign looks pretty polished and presents what seems to be a decent product.  The price, $45, is also pretty reasonable for the content of the box, though I imagine the UK price will less generous when it comes to retail.  They usually are.  Worth a look, but I just wish there was an option for more muted, mature colours.

DeepCut Studio releases Aristeia mats – More mats!  I love me some mats!  I have also repeatedly expressed my love for this particular brand of mat.  DeepCut makes some really great products and I love their recent efforts to branch out into more and more games.  Most recently, they are covering the Infinity-themed sports game from Corvus Belli, Aristeia:

Look at those colours!  Don’t they just pop?  These are really beautiful mats that capture the spirit of the game and setting whilst being very practical and usable.  Great stuff, as always.

Pirates of the Dread Sea miniatures game up on Kickstarter – I love little, independent miniatures game.  You always find cool ideas and quirks in them.  This offering is quite “Pirate of the Carribean” in feel, involving fantasy pirates and the undead:

The campaign features the rulebook for a reasonable price, but also a handful of really nice miniatures.  I really like the undead miniatures in particular.

Blog Posts/Articles: Painting Special!

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations.  This week, they all have a painting theme!

Undercoating Weather @ Steinberg Shed Space  – I did the same thing with the glorious weather!  I’m hoping to do a bit more once I finish up this post, actually…  Mechanicus this time.  The author shares his recent undercoating, having taken advantage of the UK heatwave.  I’m looking forward to seeing what he does with the Rogue Trader mutants!  I also love those Hasslefree minis, but then Kev only makes great models.

Using the new painting system @ Casual Hammerer – The author uses the contract paints to try and get some minis to the table as quickly as possible.  The end results are stunning, with some beautifully painted Sylvaneth being pictured heavily in the post.  So cool!  The advice about blending, too.

Road to Mordheim 3 @ LiberArcadia – Oh, I always loved Mordheim.  This post is really inspiring and really tempts me to either dig out some Mordheim models or, like the author, try my hand at making something out of newer miniatures.  Lots of really nice painting and some cool conversions.

Nighthaunt and Warcry @ Deathzap – I really like the author’s different take on Nighthaunt.  We’ve all seen a million ghostly ones, many of which look fantastic.  The author of this post takes a very different approach with red and yellow and they look surprisingly good.  if you’d verbally described what the author was doing, I’d have been doubtful, but it really works.  Go look!

From the painting desk #65 – The Kraken Arms @ Dawn of the Lead – Gorgeous.  Just, like, amazing.  This is such a nice piece of scenery.  I hadn’t seen the kit before and was surprised to learn that it was from Games Workshop.  The blue wood is really cool and the whole scene is just so pretty.  Another article where you really just need to click through and take a look.
