I’m still looking for the sci-fi RPG that fits me just right, giving me a good system that can be really flexible and gives an interesting setting that both gives a good jumping-off point for stories, but doesn’t constrict with an existing and expansive IP. This latter point, on not being bogged down with a player’s sense of canon, is why I would not say that Firefly, Star Wars or Rogue Trader are the games I am looking for.
Currently, Bundle of Holding is presenting another option to me in the form of Mindjammer. Could this be for me? Reading about it, I can give it a firm… maybe. The publisher offers the following by way of introductory flavour text:
“It is the Second Age of Space. The light of human civilisation, which had flickered and threatened to die, burns bright again with contact with the thousand worlds of space. Humankind laughs, filled with the joys and power of a new-found youth, and strides forth to bring its message of hope and regeneration to the stars…”

I like the initial tone being one of optimism or a yearning for exploration and expansion. It’s not the civil war of Star Wars or the Grimdark of 40K. Perhaps I’ll have wiggle room in this after all.

As usual, the bundle is split into two tiers. The first tier costs $12.95 and will net you the following titles:
Unsurprisingly, the most important part of this bundle is the core book which includes everything you need to get started. I love that it’s based on the Fate Core rules, as I do think that Fate Core is utterly excellent. The publisher lists the contents of this book as:
- full rules for starships, organisations, and culture operations
- detailed character cultures, genotypes, and occupations — play a sentient starship!
- new and innovative rules for describing planets, star systems, and alien life
- deep background material on the New Commonality of Humankind
- rules for the Mindscape and virtual worlds
- starmaps and planet descriptions, histories and background
- hyper-advanced equipment, weaponry, enhancements, starships, and more.
In addition to the 500-page core book, you also get a big, gorgeous map and a novel that helps to establish the setting. You also get The City People, which contains a pre-generated adventure and characters to get you started in the game.
If you want more Mindjammer for your moneys, the second tier is priced on a threshold that is sitting at $24.50 at the time of writing. it includes everything from the first tier, plus:
The Core Worlds Sourcebook fleshes out a big part of the setting, giving loads of material to use in your own adventures. The Far Havens takes you from the core, all the way out to the frontiers. It presents a frontier campaign, allowing players to explore beyond the boundaries of civilised space. Hearts and minds explores political unrest and threat of civil war. If you like a bit of grimdark in your games, then Children of Orion aims to scratch that itch as you play in the Venu empire, the home of the seeming ‘bad guys’ of the setting.
There are a lot more supplements available, but I think this bundle does a good job of presenting a selection that encompasses a real breadth of the setting. The variety and potential of the game are highlighted through these choices.
As usual for a Bundle of Holding, some of the proceeds go to a charity. In this case, the charity is Vision Rescue, a group working to combat child slavery in India.
