5 on Friday: 03/08/18

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday.  We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week.  Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases and Previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released.  This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate.  Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Cryptozoic previews DC edition of Spyfall – Spyfall is a great game.  it’s such a simple concept for party game/social deduction game.  It makes sense that any property, such as DC, with iconic locations can easily make use of the Spyfall format:

I do wonder if this is the start of a tedious series of themed editions, as with Love Letter, Fluxx, Munckin, etc.  Either way, this seems pretty cool.

Wayfarer’s Guide to Eberron up on DriveThru RPG – Eberron is probably my favourite of the official D&D settings.  I like the magic/tech hybridy stuff, and I find the idea of the Warforged really interesting.  I’m delighted, therefore, to find this little beauty on DriveThru RPG:

The book has all you need to get started, with outlines of races, Dragonmarks, magic items and a guide to Sharn, the city of towers.  An essential resource for anyone wanting to play in this fantastic setting.

Lots of new releases from Knight Models – Knight have put out an absolute ton of new releases.  The highlights for me are the awesome models for Nightmare Batman, the Joker Clowns and the Joker’s Daughter.  Of course, as usual, everything Knight puts out looks great:

I also really like their special GenCon miniature, Luna Lovegood in her lion hat.  It’s a cool, quirky miniature.

4th Edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay up for preorder on DriveThru RPG – This seems to be a return to the style of 1st and 2nd edition, rather than embracing the changes that came with 3rd edition.  On the whole, this is a good thing, restoring a longstanding game to the former glory it had achieved.  That said, it’s far from one of my favourite games.

I hope they make some changes to 2nd edition.  A few careers into your character it becomes quite difficult to fail important rolls.  This is a problem that does need addressing.  I hope that Cubicle 7 can address this whilst staying true to the spirit they hope to recapture in this new edition.

Fantasy Flight Games reveals the 3rd edition of Arkham Horror – I like Fantasy Flight Games and I like the work of H. P. Lovecraft.  I also, and this is a secret, really like board games.  As such, Arkham Horror should be right up my street.  This is, I’ve never played it.

I’ve just never had the chance.  I have played Eldritch Horror, though.  I’ve played that a fair bit and I love it.  With that in mind, I’m very keen to give a refined, streamlined new edition of Arkham Horror a chance.  Bring it on, FFG!

Blog Posts/Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

My Top 10 Board Games @ A Wing-Nguyen Situation – This is a nice wee list of games that sit squarely in the “gateway” category.  It’s great to see people playing and appreciating such great games, and there’s not a single one on this list I would not recommend.  Good list!

Interview with Gav Thorpe @ Juegos y Dados – When I first got into Games Workshop games and, by extension, the tabletop hobby in general, Gav Thorpe was a big figure in the hobby.  He’s not someone I’ve really followed since he left Games Workshop, so this interview makes for a good read.  it’s interesting to see what he’s been up to both professionally and hobby-wise.  Definitely worth a read for anyone who was aware of him back in the day.

Spice up D&D Monsters and Surprise You Players! @ The Dead Broke Nerd – Some great tips here on avoiding the constant churning of familiar monsters over and over again within campaigns.  These tips will help keep encounters interesting for players and for DMs.  I really like that the author also puts his own advice into practice and gives examples of when he has used these approaches in his own game.

Thoughts on the DTC Alcohol Ban @ Beyond Solitaire – An interesting read.  I’m not against the idea of an alcohol ban in the play area of a convention – especially when the event is explicitly aimed at family play.  I also believe that the hosts of a convention are fully within their right to impose such a ban with no reason provided.  It’s their house, their rules.  I agree with the author on the issue being how such a ban was put across in this case.  The use of sexual harassment as the reason minimises the role of the individual and their capacity to control their own behaviour.  I don’t like this.  Head on over and take a look at the article.  Also, I must say, good on Tom Vasel for responding directly to the post when he could have just ignored it and shrugged it off.

Hobby Highlight: Painting my Crystallans @ BreadDoll – I’m way behind on Dreadball and long ago lost track of the various teams that Mantic have been putting out.  I like these Crystallan team models a lot and this is a great post, as the author has painted a set of them.  The paint job is great and the photos are really cool.  I really like the insight into the process, too, with the author sharing how he planned his colour scheme and undertook his painting.  Really good painting article!

On No Rerolls this week, we uploaded a deck of Triple Triad Cards based on the Dragon Ball Saga and posted our weekly Hobby Update.

Catch you next week!
