5 on Friday 30/09/22

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Disciples of Tzeentch Battletome for Age of Sigmar – Although I’ve not played them since first edition, the Disciples of Tzeentch have a special place in my heart. They were my first AoS army, after all! Now, they are getting their third edition refresh:

There aren’t a huge number of changes, to be honest, but I’m mostly positive about many of the new rules. I’ll likely pick this book up at some point, even if it’s just to use alongside my Legion of the First Prince. I would like to return to them at some point, seeing as I have been finishing up some Tzeentch minis, but it’s just not a priority. More on that tomorrow! Also, travelling makes it hard to format affiliate links. If you are interested in picking this up, please consider using the links in the sidebar to support the blog!

Project Ironside, an affordable gaming table, is up on Kickstarter – This is an allegedly affordable tabletop for your tabletop. The design is reasonable attractive and simple, except for the modularity of it. That’s the interesting bit.

If I were to pick this up, I’d likely actually go for two, because I do like the idea of combining them into a larger table for wargames and the like. I gave a fuller review of the campaign earlier this week.

Terraforming Mars Dice Game up on Kickstarter – I tend to be somewhat doubtful of these types of spin-off games. I was pretty negative about the card game version, Ares Expedition. I was very wrong about that game, though. Maybe I just have bad initial instincts on these things…

Having loved both the original and the card game, I’m willing to give this one the benefit of the doubt. I might even back it! I’ll be taking a closer look at the game and campaign in a few days.

Touched by the Gods RPG up on Kickstarter – Well, we are certainly Kickstarter-heavy this week, aren’t we? I guess that having started my Kickstarter-Watch posts, I’m just more aware of these projects. This RPG caught my eye, partially because it uses a system that I enjoy (Year Zero) and partially for the theme:

I’m looking forward to doing more of an exploration of this campaign and game in the coming week. In the meantime, have a wee look at the campaign. At the very least, they’ve picked a good system and presented themselves extremely well.

The Theory of Magic, a magic-based supplement for D&D 5E, released on DriveThruRPG – Magic is one of the most interesting parts of many setting,s nad how it’s treated can make or break a game for me. D&D isn’t that interesting in that regard, at least when it comes to the Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk. It’s a lot more interesting in the Dark Sun setting, because the scarcity and the damage it’s caused. It’s really interesting in Mage and Dresden Files, but then those games are all about magic, so it should be.

Promising to ” explore the evidence we have and attempt to build a mathematical model to describe magic from first principles in an accessible way”, this is some pretty nerdy stuff. Like, taking D&D and multiplying it with maths… yeah, there’s a niche in the playerbase who will adore this book. This is such a cool idea. It’s not really one for me, but I can certainly appreciate the intent and share what looks to be a fascinating book.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Ork Invasion Part 28 – The building continues @ Imperial Rebel Ork  I love this project. A whole Ork town/fortress? Yes, please! I love the detail that IRO is going into here, with individual, identifiable buildings. So cool!

Splitting Bones Like a Big Boss @ Plastic Craic I really enjoyed the previous post on Plastic Craic that featured Calvin Rarie. He’s now back with more advice for budding Bonesplitterz! It makes for a good read, especially when it’s for a faction that’s so cool and interesting.

Top Three AOS Lists For Northern Wastes GT @ Woehammer – I went into this post for the Skaven list. I don’t really care all that much about the Sylvaneth one, and I have no interest in the Daughters of Khaine one. Really, the DoK did well? How… surprising… meh. The Skaven list is interesting, though. There’s a lot of magic stuffed into the list, with 3 Grey Seers and a Warlock. The Plague Priest’s Prayers are also magic in all but name. This is a character-heavy list with 955 of the list’s 1995 points dedicated to heroes. I am surprised and delighted to see a successful Skaven list without Stormfiends. I like Stormfiends a lot, but it’s good to see that the book can hold up without them. It’s also fun to see a Gitz list in the wildcard entry!

Blanchitsu Barbie @ Deathzap This is hideous. I mean that in the very best of ways. It’s dark, and sinister, and threatening, and brutal. I love it. I like the idea of a delightfully brutal Slaanesh army full of this sort of thing… I feel a new wishlisting article coming on!

Gitz at Warhammer World @ Woehammer I try not to put two posts from the same blog in on the same week, but this is a different author and I’ve not actually read as many posts as usual this week! That said, here we and here’s an article about the Gloomspite Gitz. My beloved Gloomspite Gitz. There are a lot of Squigs in these lists. It’s disappointing to not see some Trogg representation, but if Squigs are working for folk, I’m delighted for them. I could field most of these lists. I just don’t have nearly enough Snufflers, Squig Herds or Hoppers to do Declan’s list, though the only thing stopping me from doing any of the other lists is a lack of Colossal Squigs for Matthew’s list. It’s interesting to see how different some of these lists feel, despite all being Squig lists. This made for an interesting (hopefully motivating) read.

It’s been a third week of actual, regular posting on NoRerolls. Colour me shocked. Since my last 5 on Friday, I’ve published the following posts:

Catch ya’ll next week!
