The Backburner: Projects I’m Not Working On

I have a habit, I am told, of biting off more than I can chew. Certainly, I take on too many projects at once, and then I often find myself losing focus. Armies that were designed as 2,000 point forces balloon to ridiculous sizes. What use I really have for over 7,000 (painted) points of Gloomspite Gitz escapes me at the moment.

I’ve been vocal about some pressing projects I want to crack on with. First and foremost are the Flesh-Eater Courts, whom I am hoping to finish for an upcoming event. After that, I’m very keen to expand my Sons of Behemat.

What about projects that have either fallen by the wayside, or have never really gotten started? There are a fair few of those; probably too many to really delve into today. Let’s look at a few highlights, though…

Soulblight Gravelords

The Soulblight Gravelord were a real passion project… for all of a few days. I really had a great time planning the army (part 1 and part 2) and I even got everything built. I just didn’t get all that much further.

I did get around to painting up the three big guys; Neferata, Prince Vhordrai and Mannfred. That might have actually been a mistake, as I kind of burned through the fun models first:

I know I’ll get back to this army at some point, and it does stare at me from the shelf. However, I also know that whenever I finish something and then ask “what’s next?” I don’t look to these guys.

Slaves to Darkness

Another army that generated a lot of enthusiasm. I just loved the idea of extending my beloved Nurgle forces beyond the Maggotkin. The idea was to do a Slaves to Darkness army with the same colour scheme, and full of alternative models and conversions. I already had a load of the old, plastic Nurgley warriors from Avatars of War, so it seemed natural to use them for the warriors, and for some Knight conversions. Here are some of the kitbashes:

The bulk of the work is done then, conversion-wise. The Warriors are primed, too. The Warshrine needs a good think, so I’m leaving that for now but will come back to it. I do need to do a little greenstuff work on the Manticore and the Soul Grinder.

I have finished a few characters for the army:

They look alright, I reckon! I think I got a bit burnt out on the turquoise and pink after the Maggotkin, but I’ll come back to them, definitely! Just, you know… later.

Skaven

The Skaven of Clan Pestilens was meant to be my #NewYearNewArmy for 2020. It didn’t pan out. It took a long time into the pandemic for me to really get into painting again with my Necrons.

I just never went back to them. I will do. I think they’ll actually be a really quick job, except for a could of centrepiece models like the Plague Furnace and the Verminlord. There’s just not much to the models. I think that if I can do a bit of prep at some point, I could blast through the actual minis very quickly. I’ve managed to blast through big batches of minis before, after all!

Goblin Pirates/Raceway/Junkers/Something

Another project that seemed really cool for a wee while, but was overtaken by something shinier. I think the idea here wasn’t down to these minis, specifically, but rather the fact that I just couldn’t decide what to use them as. The initial plan was for them to be a Stormcast dragon army. Then I thought maybe Kharadron Overlords. I dunno… Maybe the new (disgusting) KO army of Renown would be fitting?

I would like to do something with these are they are very cool. I just don’t know what.

  1. Some great WIP projects there. I certainly know the feeling as I also have more stalled projects than I can count off the tip of my head. Just a part of the hobby for so many of us, I guess…
