Now, let’s take a look at what sort of progress was made in August.
August Roundup: Painting
This has been an alright month for painting. I started off by adjusting last month’s numbers slightly. I don’t know how, or when the mistake happened, but I had 106 written down and a quick recount gave me 108.
First up were a pair of Hexmark Destroyers, which were the final miniatures I needed for my 6 C’tan Necron army.

I’ve gone ahead and ticked off a second finished army with those done.
On the Gitz front, I did a Rabble-Rowza and then a quick, second Squigboss:

They look alright! I love this army so much. I do have quite a lot of it, now…
The next things on the list were some Daemons that had been sitting for quite a while. First, I painted up 20 Bloodletters of Khorne:

I didn’t really enjoy painting these. They weren’t really all that fun.
I enjoyed the Daemonettes of Slaanesh a lot more. I think I just really liked painting their hair! Here are the finished miniatures:

I then did something very different and opened up the Trollblood side of the Warmachine starter set. This little cadre, Foulblood’s Armada, was a lot of fun to paint:

I’m delighted with how these came out!
Here were the totals from the start of August:
- Purchased: 36
- Painted: 106
Our totals to be added for this month:
- Purchased: 20
- Painted: 51
And, through the power of addition, here are the totals for the year to date:
- Purchased: 56
- Painted: 157
Next up will be… I dunno. Maybe some FEC, Votann, Necrons… who knows?
August Roundup: Gaming
With Commander and Lorcana featuring more heavily in my rotation at the moment, and a goal to get more miniature games played, I’ve reduced this year’s target to 30 games. Up to the beginning of May, I had played the following games this year:
- Magic: the Gathering
- Disney Lorcana
- Warhammer: Age of Sigmar
- Apiary
- Architects of the West Kingdom
- 7 Wonders
- Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition
- Raiders of the North Sea
- Paranoia: The Uncooperative Board Game
- Unstable Unicorns
- Viscounts of the West Kingdom
- Wayfarers of the South Tigris
- Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy
- Clank! In! Space!
- Clank!
- Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress
- Tiny Towns
- Isle of Skye
- Risk
- River Valley Glassworks
- Shipwrights of the North Sea: Redux
- Necromunda
- Call of Cthulhu
- Century: Golem Edition
- How to Save a World
- Scout
- Dungeons & Dragons
- Arcane Academy
- Everdell
- Deep Sea Adventure
This month, I’ve added one more game to the list:
- A Fake Artist Goes to New York
- Adeptus Titanicus
A Fake Artist Goes to New York is one that I picked up last year, so this also completed my goal of playing 5 games that had been sitting on the shelf of shame. Woot! It was a lot of fun, hence being our game of the month.
The majority of other games this month were a mix of Magic: the Gathering and Age of Sigmar. It’s been great getting back into AoS.
My Troggoths have been hitting the table a fair bit, and I love using them again. Those Rockguts hit like trucks, and the characters do a great job of backing them up. The simplified Bad Moon rules really help, too.
Right near the end of the month, I got an intro game of Adeptus Titanicus. I’ve got my own copy now, and I’m working out what I want to do with the minis. I absolutely loved the game. My maniple (Jim, Stephen, and Susan) scored a win against an identical list that was set up for the intro game. I like the control you have over the individual units, and the ability to really push your luck and gamble a bit.
In September, I’d like to get some games of AoS in with the new Flesh-Eater Courts book.
August Roundup: Writing
With my Star Wars rewatch underway, I wrote a couple of reviews for that series, along with our usual Game of the Month post and a bunch of book reviews. In all, there were 9 reviews in August:
- Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (film)
- The Eye of Atlas (novel)
- Incredible, Legendary, Obvious (novel)
- Korea: War Without End (book)
- Star Wars: Clone Wars 2003 (TV)
- Hadestown (musical theatre)
- Six Wild Crowns (novel)
- K-Pop Demon Hunters (film)
- A Fake Artist Goes to New York (game)
Summer reading, eh?
And here were my other wordier, more thoughtful posts:
- Thoughts on our Club’s Upcoming MTG Commander Colour Challenge
- Arrangements for our colour challenge event
- Building a Baylen deck
- Thoughts on the MTG card, Vampiric Tutor
I’m hoping to get some more reviews out in the coming month. I’ve got a couple more Star Wars ones written, another book review, and a deck review. I’ve got a couple of Vampire supplements that I need to get around to, and a graphic novel.
