Game of the Month, August 2026: Dixit

Dixit is one of the most delightfully weird and charming games you can put on a table. If your game nights usually involve loud shouting, intense strategy, or someone arguing over trivial rules, this one feels like stepping into a totally different world. It’s light, whimsical, and relies on a mix of creativity and gentle mind-reading.

The heart of the game comes down to its cards, which look like tiny art prints straight out of a surreal dream; think floating castles, animals wearing suits, and clocks growing on trees. Every player holds a hand of these oversized, wonderfully bizarre cards, and the gameplay itself takes about two minutes to learn.

On your turn as the active player, you pick one card from your hand and give a clue about it out loud. It can be a single word, a phrase, a movie title, a sound effect, or even an inside joke. Everyone else looks at their own hand, picks a card that they think somehow fits your clue, and hands it to you face down. You shuffle all those cards together, lay them out face-up, and everyone votes on which card was actually yours.

Here’s the catch that makes the game brilliant: if your clue is so obvious that everyone guesses your card, you get zero points. If it’s so cryptic that nobody guesses it, you also get zero points. You only score if at least one person gets it right, but not the whole table. That sweet spot forces you to be wonderfully subtle. A clue like “sadness” for a picture of a melting clock might be way too easy, but something like “3:00 AM on a Sunday” might just trick half the room while leading one person right to your card. Meanwhile, other players get bonus points if their decoy cards manage to fool people into voting for them.

It’s my pick for Game of the Month because it brings out a completely different side of the people you’re playing with. You learn how your friends think, what kind of obscure references stick in their heads, and how they interpret weird visual metaphors. There’s no complex setup, no math to track, and zero stress. It works just as well over a casual glass of wine with adults as it does with a mix of kids and grandparents.

If you’re looking for something relaxing, visually stunning, and just a little bit magical for your next gathering, Dixit is an absolute no-brainer. There are even variant versions, including a beautiful version released for Disney’s 100th Anniversary.
