I recently finished up a big ol’ pile of Squigs. For those who missed it, I finished my Squig Herds, Boingrot Bounders, and Mangler Squigs. It felt good. They’d been sitting waiting to be painted for quite some time.

When I finished them, I reached out to the shelf near my desk and found Bloab Rotspawned and a Harbinger of Decay. Finishing these off, I decided to just see the project out and finish off the Pusgoyle Blightlords and Lords of Affliction that comprised the rest of this batch of Maggotkin Miniatures.

This is unusual for me; to be able to jump straight from one project into another with little in the way of a gap. If anything, I tend to be a bit aimless after I finish something, and I find it hard to get back into painting. I suppose that’s why I didn’t really paint anything between finishing up my Neferata in July, and moving onto my Squigs in October.

Between the two, I did try to make a start on some Daemons. Specifically, I started work on some Blue Horrors, seeing as I had already finished up some Pink Horrors and some Brimstone Horrors. I didn’t really stick it out. I’ve no doubt that I will go back to them and get them done, but it just didn’t happen at that time.
So, at the end of this batch of Maggotkin, I find myself in the same situation. Do I go on with the Soulblight? The Flesh-Eaters? The Slaves to Darkness would be topical, surely? Oh, there are a ton of options in the ol’ backlog. I dunno. I just don’t really know what I want to do, but I do feel motivated to paint.
Keen to not lose the motivation, I settled down to just paint whatever came to hand, drawing on a couple of different options. The first of these was a set of 20 Bloodletters who had found their way into my 40K Chaos Daemons list.

I sent a wee bit of time putting down that all-important one thick layer of Flesh Tearers Red. Its such a lovely colour, and it’s really going to do the heavy lifting with these chaps. I’ll be veering pretty close to the old 3 colour minimum, but then these are pretty simple minis. The minis themselves are a bit rough and damaged, being part of a big eBay job lot I picked up years ago. These were very neglected miniatures.
I also picked up another model that was sitting in front of me; namely my Vampire Lord on “Zombie Dragon”. Regular readers will understand the need for those inverted commas, as the mini is actually a Griffin instead of a dragon. It fits the theme.

I kept Neferata in front of me as I worked to replicate her colour scheme over to this miniature. I’m actually getting through this one a lot quicker than I’d expected. That’s unusual and satisfying.
The thing is, I’m still not sure what project to focus on next. I suppose I can drift along and just pick away at whatever miniatures I want, but I do like the feeling of progressing through a project, ticking off stages and miniatures as I approach a goal. It is satisfying. The problem is that I’ve taken on too much. We know this. Oh, dear; we know this.
I daresay that as I pick away at random minis, something will stick. The quicker than expected progress on the Vampire Lord might keep me on that project. We’ll see.
