5 on Friday 11/03/22

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a new AoS Battletome for the Idoneth Deepkin – Order is the blandest of the Grand Alliances. There’s just not really a nice, overarching theme or tone or feel to them. Grand Alliance Death obviously has their undead theme, whilst Chaos is tied together by the theme of the Dark Gods. Destruction, my favourite Grand Alliance, just has a pretty consistent feeling of brutality. That said, whatever I may feel about the cohesion of the Grand Alliance, I do like a lot of the individual armies. This includes the Idoneth Deepkin:

I like the idea of the Deepkin and their book is definitely of interest to me. It’s not so much even interesting for the Deepkin themselves, but rather as the basis of a potential Vampire Coast-themed undead army. I’ve written about this previously. I’m keen to take a look at the new points values and battleline options to see how best to approach such a force.

Modiphius releases 0-12 supplement for their Infinity RPG – I’ve still not gotten the Infinity RPG to the table. Am I likely to? Probably not. The books are beautiful though. They’re by Modiphius, so of course they are. Now, here’s another supplement:

I like the concept of O-12, and I really love their minis in the Infinity miniatures game. Corvus Belli describes O-12 thusly:

O-12 is an international representational and governing body, evolved from the UN, but with greater action and decision-making power. Endowed with a tactical police branch, Bureau Aegis, O-12 is the arbiter, judge, and jury of the Human Sphere.

Protecting the weaker nations, preventing any form of abuse from the stronger ones, and controlling all international systems essential for the effective functioning of the Sphere all lie within its purview.

I think this supplement would be great for introducing a little more intrigue to your campaigns, and provide either an employer for your party, or the law enforcers that they will need to avoid.

Mantic releases new Riftforged Orcs, including this beautiful Stormbringer on ManticoreMantic’s new Orc army is quite different to their previous one. Whereas the traditional Orc army was all about that feeling of tribal brutality, the new ‘Riftforged’ Orcs have some of that going on, but there’s this kind of tempest-themed stuff going on, too. Here’s one of my favourite miniatures from the range:

I really feel that these guys have a cool World of Warcraft sorta vibe. I’m not sure what I’d use them for. I couldn’t see myself doing an army, but certainly for an RPG character, it’d be pretty cool. I’m not totally sold on the manticore. The orc looks really good and I especially love his armour, but the beast is a bit goofy. All in all, a cool model that represents a cool range.

Grim Press releases their Friend or Folio PDF for D&D 5E – Like a bestiary, but for people! This is a handy little book with 100 characters that you can pick up and drop right into your 5E campaigns.

The biggest selling points for me are in layout and art. Each character is illustrated in a beautiful and seemingly-consistent style. The layout is also great because things are spaced out. There are no pages with 3 or 4 characters crammed in. Yeah, seems decent.

Wizkids releases Denizens of Barovia miniatures set – Curse of Strahd is the best official campaign book for 5E D&D. The adventure is put together so well, with great locations, plot hooks, events, and an amazing cast of characters. Wizkids is looking to bring some more of these characters to the tabletop in the form of this pack of miniatures:

They look pretty good! Ireena, Izek and Blinsky are my favourites. I really liked these characters and it’s great to see them really done well and given the treatment they deserve. I know someone who will be very keen to pick up this set of minis.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Rising From the Grave @ Refereeing and Reflection  A good read. This is an interesting rundown of the author’s views not only on a recent D&D campaign supplement but also the line as a whole. I completely agree that we need an interesting campaign setting and that Spelljammer would be a great candidate for this.

Reaper Bones Black 44011: Monstercrown Ogre Juggernaut ….Orc! #Monstermarch6 @ Azazel’s Bitz Box This is a really simple, but very effective conversion. It looks great and I love how the green skin just pops against that armour. Chonky lad!

New Battletome Idoneth Deepkin 2022 Review Warhammer Age of Sigmar 3rd Edition @ Sprues & Brews I can always count on Sprues & Brews for a good Battletome review. I’m looking into what to consider for a possible Vampire Coast army, so I’m really interested in how the new Deepkin book works.

More Orks please!!! @ My Miniature Painting Diary – Just some beautiful Orks. I love how brightly-coloured they are. Nice painting, and thanks for sharing!

[V:tM] Baby’s First Chronicle: Top Tips for Beginner Storytellers @ Malediction Dot Games Oh, some cool tips in here! I can fully endorse the idea of doing some research on your city. The game relies so heavily on traversing that urban environment that some base knowledge is really important. Limiting backgrounds is also pretty handy!

On No Rerolls this week, I shared a hobby update from the previous week. I also finished miniatures from our local club’s most recent painting contest. I had a wee look at how the 2022 hobby goals were going. Finally, I also finished off some Fellwater Troggoths!

Catch ya’ll next week!

  1. Hey now – I just want to say thank you for keeping up with the Vampire posts, for the signal boost but also for your kind words. It’s a bit of a pivot for an established wargaming blog so it’s grand to see someone coming along for the ride week after week.
