In 2017, I got back into Warhammer in a big way with our club’s slow grow league bringing into Age of Sigmar with the Disciples of Tzeentch. Since then, I do worry that I might have let things go a bit too far.
Let’s take a moment to consider exactly where I stand with my many and various armies. I’m going to do this in 3 parts:
- Painted Armies (2000+ points completed)
- Work in Progress (partially painted, or at least built)
- Planning/Backburner (purchases made, but not actively working on them)
Let’s crack on with part 1, then. What do I have painted-up and usable?
Gloomspite Gitz
Current Painted Points: 2,905 (plus 1 faction terrain piece and not including Kragnos or allied units, )
Originally slated as my ‘New Year, New Army‘ in 2021, I would potter around and half finish a few units before getting distracted by the Maggotkin of Nurgle. I came back to them with a vengeance in 2022, painting up an army of Troggs to take to a tournament in July.
The Trogg miniatures are gorgeous, and I had such fun putting this army together. There’s something go be said for a simple army that mostly plays from the Warscroll.

This army actually has one of my favourite Age of Sigmar miniatures. I love the Fungoid Cave Shaman. He’s just such a great little chap, both in terms of the fantastic miniature and his in-game rules.
I’ve long adored the Greenskins, having played as Orcs & Goblins in Warhammer Fantasy. I still have a ton of unpainted Skull Pass Goblins that I would like to use at some point.
The original plan for the army was to really explore all sides of the Gitz. That’s still my intention, though I’ve not quite gone in the order I intended. I started out on Squigs, but moved over to Trolls when I realised that I enjoyed playing them more. When I return to finish more Gitz, it’ll be the Squigs that are next on the slate.
Maggotkin of Nurgle
Current Painted Points: 2,805 (plus 1 faction terrain piece)
The Maggotkin of Nurgle was the first army that I got finished to a satisfactory 2,000 points. Initially conceived of as a conversion project, the idea of doing a Garden of Nurgle-themed force captured my imagination. I’m particularly happy with how my Beasts of Nurgle turned out.

The first batch models were all converted, except for Horticulous Slimux. He already embodied the theme I was going for. That was, at least, until I decided to expand the army, which began with me adding a Great Unclean One which used the stock model. As I continue to build the army, there will be more stock models as I add in some more mortals. I love the looks of the mortal units and am going to use them largely as-is.
Sons of Behemat
Current Painted Points: 2,165 (not including Kragnos)
I never intended for the Sons of Behemat to be my first project of 2022. The goal was to expand the Maggotkin first. The problem was that the models I wanted for the Maggotkin – the Pusgoyle Blightlords – just could not be found for love nor money. I’d found the army interesting since it was first released, but it wasn’t until January 2022 that I really got into it and I was delighted to finish the army within a month!

I do enjoy this army a lot. As I mentioned above with the Troggoths, there’s something to be said for simplicity. My turns are certainly pretty quick, as I saw last week at club as the Gargants saw their first game in several months:
I love how satisfyingly tanky my chonky bois are. In terms of future expansion, I have a Mantic Giant-based Kraken Eater converted up and ready to paint. I also have an unbuilt Games Workshop Mega-Gargant that I intend to build as a Gate Breaker. I have another Mantic Giant to also convert into another Gate Breaker at some point.
My eye has definitely drifted back to this army with the upcoming release of their new Battletome. I’m not wild about the new models that have been previewed, but I daresay I’ll talk about them nearer the time.
Orruk Warclans
Current Painted Points: 2,490 (painted by others), 330 (painted by me, not including Kragnos)
As I mentioned above, I love the Greenskins, and Orcs (now Orruks) have long had a special place in my heart. I’d been mulling an Orruk army for some time when a friend decided that he was going to sell his Ironjawz army. Here’s a post from his Instagram showing the whole lot of them:
Gorgeous! And I have some firm memories of being stomped into the ground by these lads, too. I’ve not put them into a gallery on this site yet. This is because it is my intention to rebase them to match the rest of my Destruction forces. For me, my Destruction minis are all on desert bases, all the better to mix, match, and ally between armies. I daresay I’ll add them to the gallery as I get them rebased.
Now, whilst I adore Ironjawz, I’m keen to expand the army to cover a wider range of Orruks. I painted up a couple of models to use with my Troggoths:

I’ve got a stack of other Kruleboys that I’ll get around to at some point. I’d also love to do some Bonsplitterz at some point. The Savage Orruks miniatures are way too pretty to ignore.
Next Time:
Of course, one could ask whether any army is ever truly finished, and there are still models for each of the above armies that I’d like to add. That said, these armies are in a good state, where I can happily field an army. In Part 2 of this series, I intend to take a look at the current projects on the slate where is not (yet) the case. Generally I’m in the midst of building or painting these armies, and most have previously been featured on this site. I’d expect this post to likely appear on Tuesday. See you then!

Nice work on all of these projects. I think that the trolls remain as my favourites though; I just love those skin tones.

They turned out well. This is the positive post before the next one with the other four projects I’m juggling, And the one after with the ones on the horizon. Got one coming up that I’m just starting to plan for that really excites me!
